Meet Marvin Rodriguez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin Rodriguez.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story started back in Middle School. I was this shy kid who got bullied through my entire middle school career for being gay. Most of my time, time was spent online just browsing fashion shows and high fashion editorials for endless hours, it’s how I escape reality and never got bored of it. Years later, the bullies vanished and I slowly started to gain confidence in myself but I knew something was missing. The lust for fashion kicked in and I sought out for a creative outlet. I remember walking the mall and seeing a huge sign that said “TOPSHOP/TOPMAN Hiring”. That same night I applied went through the hiring process and joined the team. I started off as a simple sales advisor but hustled my way up to being over the Personal Styling department. Through Topshop I met and styled celebrities, gained clients, and curate events. I ended my journey with TSTM last July but knew I wanted to keep the tempo. I decided to put my work out on social media, started my business in wardrobe\personal styling and the hustle has not stopped since.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a wardrobe and fashion stylist! I love creating looks that make people happy and that make you look twice. I hope people take away a sense of need. Needing the outfit, wanting to know how they can find an outfit that way, or if I could help them find it!

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My advice is to stay true to your art, but don’t be so hard-headed to point that your pride will make you lose opportunities. There is ways one can compromise and still remain true to your aesthetic and elevate one’s art, brand, or product.

When one does decide to work/collab make sure you get your credit, pay, etc. Some people will always want something from you but make sure the partnership is mutual. If you feel at any moment that you are not benefiting or the other person/business is taking advantage don’t hesitate on pulling back from it. I learned the hard way, once a local photographer wouldn’t credit me on styling gig and it was because I didn’t have enough “followers” for them. Later found out he would do the same to models and MUA’s. He no longer can book a job since the word got out. Play right and doors will open!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find my styling Instagram (@styledbymisterMR). Support my work by booking me for your next photoshoot or your next closet clean up. I also am a creative director for a local magazine that exposes raw/fresh local talent, the second issue will be featured soon. Picking up a copy or even taking a look of the digital copy would mean so much. (IG @FWRDfashion)
