Today we’d like to introduce you to MaryAnn Webb.
MaryAnn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have loved weddings since I was a little girl. I use to “play” wedding. I should have known then. I started doing flowers for weddings 26 years ago. In 1997, my partner and I started a flower wholesale that provides flowers to florist and wedding designers. My love of weddings has not wavered. I teach classes to brides who want to do their own flowers for their wedding. I also create full service wedding flowers for brides. I enjoy teaching these ladies “how to do” but my real love is creating beautiful bouquets and centerpieces. I have gone and studied floral design under Holly Chapple and become a Chapel Designer. I am very active on Instagram where I think you can see the emerging trends in floral design. I follow people all over the world. It is such fun to see what others are doing in our industry.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always struggles. We have been wedged between two business and have not been able to expand when we needed too. The road has been pretty smooth. Growth spurts are really all I can complain about.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Houston Flower Girls story. Tell us more about the business.
Houston Flower Girls custom designs are known for using fabulous flowers. I let all my flowers open to their greatest potential! Most florist are afraid that the flower will die. The knowledge from owning a wholesale has really expanded my creative side because I now know how far I can push the flowers to show their beauty. The most common thing I hear about my weddings is how beautiful and unusual the flowers are. I create for each couple. I don’t have any “package” deals. I sit down with each bride, like I will do today and look at their Pinterest board and create the look they want. Brides tend to say that their boards are all over the place. I have the ability to look at their board and figure out what they really want. I think that is my gift to wedding floral design.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe you make your own luck. I have been very lucky in this life! I have had crisis occur like the wheel coming off of a delivery van carrying the statement arrangements on the freeway. If you surround yourself with good help, things tend to work out.
