Mathew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As an immigrant family, we started our life with $20. And then as our income increased, our standard of living also went up, and we were soon living paycheck to paycheck. 2006-2008 was a trying period in our lives with regard to family circumstances, finances, as well as the Great Recession. In 2009, we attended Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and decided to take control of our finances. During our debt-free journey, we encountered numerous families struggling with debt and witnessed their marriages crumbling in front of us.
As we moved from one baby step to another, we received a calling to help people around us with financial knowledge, so that they would be enabled and equipped to attack their debt. We pursued the required certifications and training and started coaching family and friends.
We quickly recognized that most financial advisers have something to sell – either their investment portfolio, insurance, or services. We decided to focus on educating and empowering our clients with financial knowledge and provide unbiased analysis of their financial situation without selling any products or services. We do not receive a commission from any financial institutions.
Over the years, we have had the honor and privilege of seeing hundreds of families change their family tree and enjoy financial peace. We hope to be the beacon of light and hope to many more Houstonians in the years to come.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was not a smooth road; however, it was not too tough either. Since we started with family and friends, we were recognized as credible and trustworthy. The endorsement from Dave Ramsey as the local financial coach helped us prove our credentials.
We underestimated the market size and growth was quite rapid. Our biggest challenge was in hiring experienced employees who bought our vision and had the ability to connect with our client base.
In financial coaching, it is all about trust and confidentiality. We should be able to relate to and understand what a client is going through. Since our family went through all the struggles, we are able to empathize with a client struggling with debt. However, there were situations that were foreign to us and it took us few months to overcome those challenges.
Another challenge was to distinguish ourselves from an ordinary financial adviser. Houston being a major city has a number of financial advisers, However, there are very few financial coaches who have the requisite personal and professional experience.
Our faith also helped us to encourage those who come to us. What people expect from a coach is sound financial counsel, and more importantly, hope and encouragement. Since we have been recipients of these, we are able to pay it forward to our clients with joy.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was fascinated with numbers. I also had a deep interest in analysis. This would become quite evident during the election season when I would pour over all the results, and then conduct a complete analysis of how and why candidates won and lost. This interest in numbers and the ability to identify solutions to complex problems led me to pursue my bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. I also played chess and enjoyed it very much. In addition to that I dabbled in speech and debate, and have won quite a few competitions. I am a people-person and love being around people.
Today all these traits have worked excellently towards being a financial coach and helping families with their finances and marriages.
