Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt O’Neil.
Matt, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started playing piano at age five taking lessons from my mom. I grew up in a very musical family so I was always exposed to it. At age ten, I started playing guitar and joined my first band. By age 15, I had picked up drums as well and was playing shows regularly with my punk rock band.
Throughout my time of being a musician, I also did a lot of recording and beat making at my home studio. This is where I started the foundation for the career that I am in today. That’s what led me to decide to pursue a passion as a career. After graduating from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Production and Engineering, I started my journey working in various studios and live sound venues around Boston and traveling to New York and Los Angeles. After a few years of doing that, I decided to find somewhere to settle down and grow what I had already started. That’s when I moved to Houston, TX and started working with Studio 713.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, there were hard times. I think everyone views failure and loss differently depending on their personal circumstances though. At the very beginning of my career when facing difficulties, I would become easily frustrated. However, now I look at my failures as opportunities to learn and grow. Your mind frame is really important in helping you handle the hardships that you will inevitably face in this business or any business for that matter. As Seneca said, “It’s a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness”.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m an 7x Platinum Audio Engineer and Producer/Songwriter. I’ve worked with artists such as Swae Lee, Travis Scott, Ty Dolla $ign, Smokepurpp, Don Toliver, Kirko Bangz, and many more. I work at Studio 713 in Houston, TX. I’m most known for my engineering and mixing work in Hip-Hop/Rap and Pop, but I work with all styles. What sets me apart from others in my field is my musical theory background and the instruments that I play. I was a musician first and then moved my focus into the production side, so it makes it easier for me to relate and understand the artist’s needs.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck, I believe in energy.
