Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurita Henderson.
Hi Maurita, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a mother of 2- Alayah 13 and King 5. I have my degree from Sam Houston State University in Psychology and Business. I am currently in graduate school at TSU to obtain my EMBA. I enjoy reading and listening to TD Jakes for inspiration. My grandparents were the first people to introduce me to the wonderful world of entrepreneurship. When I was 13 I used to work at my grandparent’s local storefront selling Christian books in Navasota, Texas. Growing up I was very active with sports and played basketball and was a cheerleader (head cheerleader my freshman, jr and sr year of highschool). I started doing taxes in 2012 when my oldest brother Jermaine Henderson suggested that I work with him preparing taxes. I was very excited about the idea because I was working as a caseworker at MHRMA and I did not enjoy it and I was underpaid. The new opportunity would help me expand and also make more money.
I franchised with a tax company out of Dallas Texas named Xpert Taxes. I decided to start my own tax service bureau in 2018 after my mentor suggested I go into business for myself instead of working for that company. So with that advice in 2018 I started MHenderson Financial Services Firm and my own tax business named Xclusive Taxes. I help people start their own tax business, and insurance agency. Also I started my own travel Agency named MHenderson Travel and assist people with booking flights, hotels, cruises, rental cars, etc. I decided to expand my services in 2020 during the pandemic and opened an online beauty supply store, named Xclusive Beauty. The transition was very easy because I worked as a business owner previously with Xpert Taxes. I was apart of a franchise with them
I also started my insurance agency MHenderson Insurance Group in 2018. I have been an insurance agent since 2013 working with your local Allstate, Farmers and other insurance agencies as an independent insurance agent. The company I am working with now is called Invida and I enjoy hiring and educating other agents and helping them obtain their insurance licenses. I like to consider myself a person that likes to help people grow. I wouldn’t be the successful person I am today if someone did not help me. I also obtained my travel agent certification in 2018 and added it to my list of services. I was asked in 2021 to be apart of a collaboration book called Boss Lady, The book is about 10 women who went from broke and broken to being the boss. We tell our stories to help encourage and inspire people to not give up when they face obstacles in life. The book is meant to inspire and encourage people of all walks of life..
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur has its ups and downs. Mainly because you have to believe in yourself when no one else does. It takes consistency and being strong-minded to achieve your goals. I had to teach myself to work 8 to 9 hour days like I did when I was working for someone else. I learned partnering with like-minded individuals and getting trained by people who have been in the industry helps me grow. Some of my struggles along the way has been growing my firm and finding the right individuals to hire to help me grow. Also in the tax industry maintaining clients that are consistent is challenging because TurboTax has been my biggest competitor over the years. People like to do their own taxes and not really seek help from professionals. Nonetheless, I always get new clients each year who needs tax assistance with their personal and or business taxes.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own a tax service bureau and insurance agency. (financial services)- We also offer personal and business loans. My company is an umbrella service. I assist people with their personal and business taxes since 2012. I have been a licensed insurance agent since 2013. I started my insurance agency in 2018. I offer auto, home, health, commercial, and life insurance services. I also help with college savings plans for parents. I started another business in the beauty industry in 2020 during the pandemic, called Xclusive Beauty, where I offer wholesale beauty supply products. My book “Boss Lady” came out Feb 2022., and is currently available on Amazon. It is about 10 ladies who went from Broke to Broken to being the boss. What sets us apart from other businesses is that we help educate our clients on their taxes and insurance. and get funding for their small business. My company is a one stop shop for all of the people’s financial needs. I am most proud of my brand and company because we help people secure their financial future. I also started my own travel agency in 2018 named MHenderson Travel Agency. We assist with helping people plan their vacations, cruises, hotels, rental cars, etc. I am mostly known for preparing taxes and insurance., although I have expanded my services throughout the years.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am a very private person. Many of the people I hire do not know that I sign their checks because I am so actively involved in their success and progress. When I hire people I like to go behind the scenes and work alongside my team. I would never ask them to do something that I have never done in order to be successful. I had a book signing event March 19th called Authors Extraganza at JW Marriot – Galleria Houston, and a homebuyers workshop seminar to assist people with becoming a homeowner April 30th- Location TBA.
