Meet Maxine Hu of Blush Floral Co in Outer Northwest Loop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxine Hu.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Maxine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
So, my career really started kind of unexpectedly. I was a recent graduate from the University of Houston. During my last semester in college onto my graduation date, the thought of stepping into the real world and my new career wasn’t really exciting to me. I didn’t think too much into it and I just figured this was just supposed to be my next steps in life and the path of what I was supposed to be doing.

In between having a baby, graduating and taking some time off from work from having my second daughter, I got a little bored of not keeping busy with work and having a lot of spare time on my hands. Instead of looking for jobs with my degree, I enjoyed my time at home with my daughters and also invested some of my free time decorating for friends parties for the fun of it.

During these times, I had a thought to add flowers in the decor and decided to learn a little more about working with flowers. I’d attend different friend’s weddings, take some large pieces home, and deconstruct the arrangement to see how it was put together. With no idea of what materials they used or what they were for. Thinking back, I had no clue what I was looking at after taking all the flowers apart.

I decided to learn a little more by taking a small class to get me a little more familiar with flowers. After the three day class ended, I remember walking away with an epiphany. A feeling struck by me making me realize how much I enjoyed each moment of this class, and how I never had this moment throughout my years of college working towards my degree. It was that moment when I remember going home and spending every moment I had figuring out how I could actually do something I really loved doing into a career. Spending countless hours staying up late on the computer and trying to figure it all out. I really had no clue starting but was quite determined to figure it out.

I started my business a few years back on my own, learned a lot through experiences and it was hard… really hard to do on my own. My personal life at the time had changed in many ways and I decided it was best for me to keep doing what I loved by working alongside a handful of many amazing local designers. Working with these designers has taught me things and different perspectives but also a realization that going back to my business was what I was meant to do. It’s still a lot of long days, days of being on your feet, hard work, a lot of learning experiences, but to say the least, I still wake up everyday falling in love with what I do.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has NOT been a smooth road. I don’t think life really hands you those cards. I’ve made so many mistakes, but I’ve learned to embrace them. The feeling sucks when you know you did something wrong, but learning to make a mental note and putting it in the back of your head for the next time around is always a great thought to rely on. I’ve dealt with a lot of struggles. One being running a business. Never in my life would I have thought that I’d be having my own business. It’s pretty tough with no road map of the correct way to do things in my line of work, but the journey to me has been interesting, fun, and at times costly. But that’s okay, we all have to learn something one way or another, and let it be a lesson to us all by going through a struggle to learn how to be better and more efficient and how we can do it differently the next time around.

Blush Floral Co – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The business is a Floral design company catering to Weddings and Events. With a more garden style approach, our signature style is more organic and nature-inspired. Think about walking through a garden full of lush flowers, that’s how I’d like to describe the business’s brand. As a company, one of my favorite things is being able to bring a vision to life and adding our own personal touch of creativity.

Turning an expected passion into a career for others to enjoy is what really makes me proud as a company… I hope to always inspire others to follow their dreams.
