Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Johnson and Gianni Jackson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Maya and Gianni. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Maya is a New Orleans, LA native and Gianni from San Francisco, CA. We both graduated from Texas Southern University with our bachelor’s in the Healthcare field. We have one daughter together who’s name is Gia. Since having her and working in the healthcare field. For years we became so drained and decided to take another route by starting our own baking company. GMJ Baking Company was an eye-opener to so many things that we loved to do, which was to create, eat, and enjoy our time together. Maya’s family is big on cooking and baking. So she viewed baking as her outlet to do so many things. Gianni comes from a family who loves to create innovative ways for people to enjoy life, whether it’s through music or food. So that is how the story of our cake jars were created. Simple, yet shareable, and unique.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Every road always has some obstacles, especially being parents, making time for ourselves was always on the back burner. As a result, we stayed true to ourselves and continued to be supportive to one another in whatever we both decided to do. It can be tough, but making time for family is very rewarding, which leads us to start our business and become our own bosses.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the GMJ Baking Company story. Tell us more about the business.
GMJ Baking Company is a homemade cake jar bakery. We specialize in gourmet made cake jars which includes a mixture of traditional flavors as well as creative ones. We are known for our non-traditional flavors such as strawberry cake and white chocolate frosting, Neapolitan, and our chocolate cake topped with praline frosting. GMJ also stands out because our jars are so beautifully put together along with our packaging, which makes one feel so special when delivering our treats. We’re also different because we want the country to try our jars so we take pride in shipping our products nationwide. As a company, we are most proud of being able to have people enjoy our products, which results in reordering and referring to others in their area. What sets us apart from others is being able to innovate so many different flavors for everyone’s taste buds and cravings. The starting of GMJ Baking Co., of course, had some challenges, but we began to invest in ourselves and create this company, which brings us so much joy.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Of course, each business starts from somewhere. We would say everything has been a total blessing. Without stepping out on faith and putting 1000% into our business, we never would’ve thought it would become so successful in so little time. We have so much support from people around us and from people trying our products and falling in love with them. We know it’s only up from where we are now. This also helps us spend more time with one another, which before starting this company, we had no time due to working so much. We will continue to strive in creating handcrafted desserts for everyone to enjoy for any occasion.
