Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayem Metzger.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mayem. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a behavior analyst by day and a baker by night. The Behavior Baker was created to incorporate my two passions: behavior and baking! It is an educational blog that is home to study tips, videos, blog posts, and resources for people of color in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis to prepare and sit for both the Registered Behavior Technician and Board Certified Behavior Analyst exams.
Given the small percentage of minorities in my field of work, I wanted to create a place where people can feel encouraged, empowered, and confident to sit and pass the biggest exam of their lives! Being at this position in my field is no easy journey. Throughout my studies, I relied heavily on different resources, study pages and groups that I stumbled upon by chance.
Given that God has blessed me with the ability to sit and pass my board exam on my first go, The Behavior Baker has been my way of giving back and pouring into others who are studying for this difficult exam. On the flip side, my biggest study breaks that I took throughout school involved baking in my kitchen. I am a self-taught baker, and it has been a big hobby of mine since I was a little girl.
Making Duncan Hines box cakes with my mom was always a regular event held at my home growing up. Inspired by various Instagram bakers, I have perfected my craft and have shared love with many. It has now turned into a small business, where I create delicious baked goods for friends, family, and many others in the Houston area!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There’s no such thing as a smooth road in my field. Here’s a perfect example: While taking my board exam my computer at the testing center crashed twice. I knew just then and there this wasn’t meant to be. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so defeated in my life.
I remember my mind just being flooded with lies of not being smart enough, and not being good enough to ever make it be a behavior analyst, and that my computer crashing was that sign. But God knew the plans He had for me way before me choosing the only malfunctioned computer in the testing center.
With all of my struggles, challenges, ups, and downs, my faith has kept me afloat through it all. Leaning on God and putting my full trust in Him has honestly been such a pivotal key-from my career, to The Behavior Baker, to my relationships, to everything!
Just the courage alone to start my company and the thought of showing the world my work was something that took me a while to build. But I’m so glad that I did. I had the idea and the vision for a while, but it took me so long to make it come to life.
Praying over it and giving it to God, and letting Him do the rest has been such a blessing to see everything work out His way, and for it to be able to bless and help people in their own ways. That’s what it’s all about!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Behavior Baker – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Behavior Baker is an educational blog designed to teach, inspire, empower, and encourage people of color in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. It is also a place to order baked goods for parties, birthday, etc. for people in the Houston area.
On the behavior side of my company, I create funny, quirky video explanations of difficult behavioral terms and concepts that are important to know in the field in the hopes of people gaining a better grasp and understanding of the technical behavioral terms. On the baking side of my company, I specialize in cupcakes for any occasion.
Cupcakes are definitely my biggest hit and what The Behavior Baker is known for. I think my being a woman of color in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and incorporating my love of behavior and baking together to create a fun, warm, and inviting space sets me apart from any other study site or bakery.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future… I would love to host various pop-up study sessions for people who are studying to take their board exams. Because who wouldn’t want to binge on delicious cupcakes while learning about Applied Behavior Analysis?!
I would also love to partner up with small business owners to include my baked goods in their stores for people to purchase. And hey, maybe a storefront down the road?! A girl can dream!
