Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Aguilar.
Mayra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Houston, TX and have lived here my entire life. I am the owner and founder of Thrifty & Crafty. Starting a business was not something that I grew up thinking I wanted to do.
Having a child at a very young age, I focused on getting a degree and getting a job in Corporate America to provide for my little family. After working for someone else’s business for 8 hours a day, five days a week and the fact that I had a long time before I could actually retire from Corporate America. I realized that I could use those hours to instead build something that I am proud of and show my kids that you can do anything you want. So I created my blog in 2018 to help busy families reconnect and accomplish their goals by sharing my debt-free journey, self-care ideas and easy fun family crafts. Since then, my business has continued to grow into new avenues and have since also opened up an Etsy shop, Thrifty & Crafty Shop.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing worth having is ever easy. Struggles and challenges come with doing something outside of your comfort zone and following your dreams.
The struggles that I have come across during this journey is definitely time. Being a wife, mom and still having my full-time job but also spending my nights at home working towards my dreams is hard to manage and can sometimes be overwhelming. I have had to learn how to step back and take a deep breath and remember the reason why I started. For moms like me, that feel like they have a thousand things on their to do list, it is important to put ourselves at the top of the list and take care of ourselves before anything else.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Thrifty & Crafty is a blog I started to share my journey and experience to inspire families to live a debt-free life and reconnect as a family through art and DIYs. I have always loved being creative for as long as I can remember, and I feel as you get older, we seem to not explore that side of us as much as we probably should. My blog helps families accomplish this with easy to follow projects, tips and fun ideas.
I also have an Etsy Shop that I started under the Thrifty & Crafty umbrella where you can get custom handmade gifts and vinyl decals for your own DIY gifts or projects.
I am proud at the fact that my business has awesome customers, whether it’s my readers, followers or customers through my Etsy shop, I have created some amazing bonds with amazing women and can not wait to continue to grow to provide them with even more helpful content and products,
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is an amazing city full of culture and beautiful people. I would highly recommend Houston to any small business owners that are just starting off. Whether it’s art, fashion, culture, or even DIY parties (like I want to host one day), Houston has everything and so much to offer.
