Meet Megan Gump of Project Nourish in NorthWest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Gump.

Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up with a lot of food allergies. Mostly allergic to red food dye and other artificial colorings. But, these sensitivities created other problems for me throughout my life.

At the age of 4, I once ate a hot dog at a party that made me break out in hives so bad. I was laid out on our kitchen counter with my mom rubbing an oatmeal paste all over my body. I had to be rushed to the hospital because my throat was closing due to the inflammation of the reaction. This was one of MANY hive breakouts during my younger years.

As a young child and throughout middle school, I had severe ADHD. Never took medications for my attentional difficulty or hyperactive energy but it did create challenges for me growing up.

In middle school and high school, I began to experience other emotional symptoms of depression, self-sabotage, and a confused self-image. I also had a serious addiction to candy. Connected? Most definitely.

If only I knew the things I know now back then. But hey, I wouldn’t be the same person!

My greatest struggle in the last year has been my hormonal imbalance. I started taking birth control at the age of 15 upon my mother’s request and finally got off the pill in January 2017 after learning all of the horrible side effects it has on a woman’s body. Thirteen years of taking a prescription medication, every day of my life.

The Nutritional Therapy Association was the first place I began to learn about holistic health, non-toxic living, and functional medicine.

I lived most of my life never thinking about the root cause of my food sensitivities, ADHD, emotional issues or acne I developed right around the age of 15 and carried along with me into my adult life.

As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I work on healing my body every day, practicing the art of self-love and creating lasting peace within myself and shown to others. Yoga, CrossFit, and running helps with this too, of course.

I’m here to help you discover and address the root cause of your symptoms. Tired all the time? Fertility issues? Adult acne? Gaining weight or hit a plateau? Feel like you eat clean and workout but not seeing results? Do you suffer from depression, ADHD or other symptoms as I did? Gut issues? Do you poop every day? Cause you should! Let’s work together to find the underlying causes of your health symptoms with Nutritional Therapy and a Functional Medicine.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Creating a business is not easy. There are always challenges but the most important thing is to keep stepping forward. Don’t get caught up if you stumble down the wrong path, we all take a wrong turn sometimes but we learn from those mistakes and grow. I used to worry about not doing something right so most of the time, it didn’t get done at all! Today, I go for it! Sometimes I win and sometimes I learn. There is no loss in either path.

Project Nourish – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a Certified Functional Medicine and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. I also have a safer skincare business with a company called Beautycounter to educate and advocate for safer products. I work with my clients on diet, lifestyle and getting to the root cause of their symptoms and concerns. I use comprehensive lab testing that can be sent directly to their home to investigate and discover underlying factors for their symptoms. I work with clients from all over the world over the phone or through Skype. Once we have the results from their lab testing, I create a personalized protocol for my clients using supplements, herbs, vitamins/minerals, and of course diet and lifestyle recommendations.

I have a passion for working with young adults as well as advocate for safer skincare and cosmetics. In today’s world, our kids are getting sicker at younger ages. More autoimmune problems, asthma, autism, cancer, obesity, headaches, etc. are happening in our young populations. There are also more toxic chemicals used in our everyday products more than the history of mankind. My goal is to educate the young adults how to navigate the waters between what to eat, the toxic chemicals to avoid in personal care and household cleaner products, how to protect themselves from EMF’s and basic lifestyle recommendations.

The best part of my job is the stories. The stories from my clients who had severe stomach issues that have resolved, clients who were feeling tired every day and can finally play with their kids again, clients who were on multiple prescription medications and were able to stop taking prescriptions because their numbers from test went back to the normal range.

As a functional medicine practitioner, I do consider every part of the body and investigate infections, imbalances, and deficiencies, but I also know the entire body is connected and we can not focus on one area but need to piece the puzzle together of how everything is connected.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Changing my client’s lives, Watching them heal and get better, feel better! The education part is so powerful. Giving someone the tools to take care of themselves, eat right and make good decisions with their products choices is empowering.
