Meet Megan LaBernz of Barefoot Girl Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan LaBernz.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Megan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My discovery of yoga began after my mother’s sudden death due to breast cancer in 2007. I was a very active athlete- an ex-collegiate volleyball player, a daily runner, and an avid surfer and found myself having severe stress due to the fact that I could not quiet my mind or find any inner peace after experiencing this huge loss.

I stepped into a yoga studio in 2007, very intimidated, and began to transform my body, mind and soul. It was a challenging experience due to the fact that yoga is a very personal journey and is different than the competitive athlete mentality I once had. As cliché as it sounds, yoga literally saved my life-and I began to learn how to breathe, meditate and find the peace of mind I was searching for.

After being a student for 2 years, I decided to get my yoga certification through Joy Yoga in 2009. After being a teacher/coach in both private and public schools for 11 years, I decided to move closer to the water and open a yoga studio. I started Barefoot Girl Yoga in a small space in League City 2 years ago and have outgrown it and moved to Clear Lake Shores to a bigger space. I did my first Yoga Alliance Accredited Teacher Training this past September and my small studio is now growing little by little. I feel honored that I was able to train the teachers that now work in my studio. They are my family and I am so grateful.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As a small business owner, I wear many hats and face many challenges. I teach, many classes, clean and maintain the facility, balance the books, market the business, network and cultivate relationships. Also, I compete with other facilities, find good teachers, retain students, and stay cash flow positive and try to preserve the integrity of yoga.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Barefoot Girl Yoga – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My style of vinyasa yoga is one of fun, funky and letting your inner self be set free. I encourage having fun in classes and listening to your body instead of your ego. I feel like the tranquil atmosphere, the eclectic taste of music while I teach and my hands-on adjustments keep my studio thriving. Also, my back ground as an athlete tends to attract athletes to my studio.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am adding new teachers to the schedule…for example we are about to add Art and Yoga classes as well as expanding our style of yoga from not only Vinyasa and Restorative but adding Kundalini as well.
