Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Scott.
Meghan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Pearland and have always loved Houston and its diverse community. Being an artistic kid who loved to color and create, I started experimenting with my hair early on. By the time I was finishing high school, I knew I wanted to do hair. I was cutting and coloring my hair and a few of my friends. My grandmother was a hairdresser so I always say it runs in the blood. I put myself through cosmetology school while working 2 jobs. I had a blast learning how to really do hair and my artistic eye made me a natural. I got out of school and started working at a little salon in the mall to get my feel of salon life. I knew it was where I was meant to shine. I quickly outgrew that salon and moved into a big salon where I worked for 4 years building a name for myself and a following of loyal clients and friends.
I had always dreamed of owning my own salon one day. About 3 years ago I got the chance to jump into my own business… So I left the salon and became my own boss renting a suite inside plaza salons. I’m now the owner of Glamour by Meghan, where each day I get to share my skills with my clients and make them feel beautiful…
Every person that sits on my chair is a new canvas. I love the freedom my job gives me to create living works of art. I do a little bit of everything in the salon, from cut, color, styling to extensions and I love fun and creative ideas. I collaborate with my clients. I’m so blessed to get to do what I love every day and thankful I have clients who see my talents and stick to me. I have been doing hair for almost 10 years and couldn’t imagine don’t anything else.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think, one of the biggest obstacles I faced in my career so far is knowing when it is time to stop working for someone else and start working for myself. I had worked at three different salons and worked underneath many bosses. The last boss that I had was an extreme micromanager and at this point, I’ve been in the business for almost 7 years and I didn’t need to be told how to do my job anymore. I was a natural. I already knew how to make people feel beautiful and I knew what the prices were at the salon. She still continued to go back and change what I told people. I got fed up with it and decided to jump out on my own.
I think the biggest obstacle is taking that leap of faith that your clients are going to follow you. Being your own boss is going to be everything you hope it will be and that your talents, as an artist, will shine through. Being the boss means there’s going to be a lot more responsibility you have to provide all the color and all the products and make sure that all your towels and bowls are clean and provide a space for your clients to be comfortable and to come and tell you everything going on in their lives and still make them feel beautiful when they walk out of the salon. Even though life is crazy, I pride myself on being the place clients can get away from their lives and let loose a little. I am a “hairapist” with a little cheaper bill than a therapist!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Glamour by Meghan – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I think, first and foremost, I am definitely bright and stylish, getting me the nickname “Meghan” with the pink hair! My clients know I am up for any challenge and love to have fun with hair. I am a jack of all trades. I do color, cut, blowouts, extensions and updos for weddings and any special occasion. I have clients that come from all over the city, Katy and a few from out of town, like Austin to come and see me for extensions. I also do a few Texans cheerleaders and the rockets dancers. I love getting to do extensions for the instant satisfaction of loving your hair and my girls come from all over for my expertise and reasonable pricing. I think I’m also well known for my ability to listen. I do a full consultation with every client even if it is a simple trim. I never want someone to feel like they were rushed in and out. I like to take the time to know what’s gonna fit in my clients lifestyle. Is the color she picked going to be easy to maintain? Are the extensions going to be manageable for what she wants? Is the haircut going to compliment her face and color? Above all, I think I’m well known for my gift of gab. My clients know I’m always on the go traveling to Europe and all across the US. I always come back full of exciting stories to tell and places to see when they travel themselves. Some of my clients come just to listen to my adventures and swear I need to write a travel blog.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to keep growing as a better stylist and educate myself on the latest trends by attending hair shows. I also look forward to molding my salon suite into the perfect salon. I love that I can decorate my room whoever I like and I look forward to adding more Meghan touches. A little sparkle never hurt anybody!
