Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Comegys.
Melanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After practicing yoga for 11 years, I decided to dedicate my life to the practice of yoga, and signed up for a yoga teacher training program. I have since received two certifications in yoga and am now an E-RYT 500 with Yoga Alliance.
I have been practicing yoga since 1999 and teaching yoga since 2012. I am also a Reiki healer under the Usui Shiki Ryoho tradition. I own and am the Program Director of Tex Sun Yoga School, a registered 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training program with Yoga Alliance.
I began teaching adults in 1993, as a Head Trainer in the corporate world, using my corporate training skills to create the curriculum for Tex Sun Yoga School 200 HR Teacher Training. I worked in Orthopedic Surgery for 17 years in Academics before becoming a full-time yoga teacher.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Challenges are a part of life, and the transition from full time corporate world employee to owning my business has brought interesting insights about being a small business owner. The biggest challenge has been not having all the benefits that come along with a regular salaried employee job. The availability of consistent yoga opportunities can be scarce during certain times of the year, but somehow I always find students that are looking for the services that I provide. I love that I am in charge of how my time is being used and this has been the biggest blessing. Making my own hours and meeting lots of new and interesting people is the best part.
Tex Sun Yoga School – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the owner and teacher of Tex Sun Yoga School and have been teaching adults since 1993 as a corporate trainer, creating curriculum and testing for employees. It has been a natural progression to bring my corporate teaching and training skills into yoga classes. I offer Group Classes, Private Sessions, Corporate Yoga, Yoga Workshops and 200 Hour Teacher Training.
I present yoga teachings in a style that is easily understood by students. I love to create an inclusive atmosphere for learning and growing. I teach all classes with a focus on yoga alignment, and I create simple approaches so that my students are able to easily grasp yogic concepts, theories and asana practice. I do my best to keep classes light hearted and enjoyable to help ease tense yogis. I most enjoy inducting new practitioners into the asana practice, or helping seasoned students delve deeper into yogic philosophy. I am always ready to assist students with teaching methods, theories, ethics, precepts, anatomy, classical texts and advanced alignment in asana.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as having the ability to help someone else. However small or large the gesture, just knowing that I helped someone is how I define my success. I have helped students in their healing, I have helped elevate their practices, and have helped guide others in better understanding a yoga subject. This is how I see that I have succeeded.
