Hi Melissa Ashlin & Meghan Lutschg, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We’ve always loved spending time in our own yards, creating beautiful spaces and experimenting with plants. In early 2024, Meghan had the wonderful idea to turn that shared passion into something more after noticing so many empty pots around our community—and realizing how many people wanted help bringing them to life. Both of our mothers have always been gardeners and serve as our consultants and extra help when needed.
What started as a fun hobby for a few friends quickly blossomed into The Perfect Pot, a full-time business that lets us do what we love on our own terms—and together.
Since launching in the spring of last year, we’ve continued to grow in exciting ways. This year, we expanded our offerings by teaching classes at local businesses like Berings and speaking at garden clubs and country club luncheons. Our growth has been fueled by the incredible support of our clients and the generous referrals they share. Every pot we plant reflects our love for what we do and the joy of helping others create something beautiful.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a pretty smooth process so far, though we definitely had a learning curve when it came to building a business from the ground up. We weren’t quite prepared for how quickly things would take off, and that became especially clear during our very first Mother’s Day season!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in custom, curated, container gardens and seasonal porch pots. We do everything from small jobs (1 pot) to full porch overhauls, backyards and small landscaping jobs.
We’re known for our unique, thoughtfully curated designs—pots that add value and beauty season after season. We’re most proud of building a business that we get to do together and that allows us to work around our families’ busy schedules.
We don’t think there’s anything quite like The Perfect Pot in our area. Many people struggle with what to plant in containers that can handle Houston’s ever-changing climate—what will thrive in sun versus shade and survive both the Houston summer and winter. That’s where we come in: helping clients create beautiful, thriving pots that bring life to their spaces all year long.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We love Houston! It is the city that brought us together and where we love raising our families. The people of Houston are amazing! They are warm, kind and supportive of local businesses.
We also love the diversity of Houston, the food scene, the abundance of local art, design, sports teams – we could go on and on. There is definitely something for everyone here.
The only thing we don’t always love is the hot summers. By September, everyone is over the heat and humidity.
