Meet Melissa and Jonathan Steely of Jessecure Business Solutions in Spring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa and Jonathan Steely.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
There were many small events that lead to a simple conversation between my husband and I. We both have worked our whole lives and both have always had side jobs as consultants helping out friends with small to mid-size businesses in our areas of expertise. Funny side note, most of the time when we assisted people with tax preparation, or business advice we usually charged nothing and were paid frequently in homemade dinners and gift cards to Starbucks. One day though, after my last layoff from the oil and gas company I was with, we discussed possible openings for me to apply to. All the jobs that paid what we felt I needed to make so I actually had a paycheck left over to bring home after taxes, gas, daycare, and nanny cost for our older kids who were now too old for daycare, required at least two hours of commute a day and would also consume much more than an 8 hour work day. By this time, we also were already struggling with daycare raising our children because we worked so much, and the fact that I always had to miss field days, school events, and just quality time with my children was bothersome. I also have one child that requires frequent medical care and treatments so I just could not jump back on the same carousel that was my career over the past decade.

This is the where the conversation between my husband and I began. Why do parents, not just women, have to choose between working or being parents? How can single parents ever be expected to survive when gas and daycare consumes most of their pay? How do small business owners ever have time left over for their family? And the most important question was how can we do something about this?

Well, Jessecure Business Solutions (aka JBS) was the answer. We started our company with very simple focus. We were going to target small to mid-size businesses across the country and offer them a network of services at extremely affordable pricing to not only help them grow but to take all the tasks that could be delegated virtually so entrepreneurs could regain life at home. Then we were going to build our brand to operate completely on virtual servers and with cloud based software and make a truly stay at home job and employ people with great skill sets but remove the concern for daycare and additional expenses or reasons that keep someone with great skills succeeding in a traditional role.

We started with 4 clients. The beginning was many hours for us to build and make this truly virtual model work but now we have over 80 clients we support in all areas of business on a daily basis, and an additional 200 clients we either helped them start up their company or get their company running. We also have expanded an office in Oklahoma and added additional support companies including JesTechs, a premiere website hosting and development company, and partnered with Nieto Technologies in both Spring, TX and are opening a Nieto franchise in Oklahoma City next month. The goal is to continue building remote offices for clients needing more support than virtual into every major metropolitan by teaming with other local freelance workers to build a nationwide network that can handle any need and helping the underemployed have career fulfillment.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road but then again we are bridging business with a global initiative so of course there would be bumps along the way. The main struggle is just balance. You want to help as many people as possible but the truth is that you can only continue to help as long as you put your business hat on as well and make sure the company is profitable enough to maintain continued growth. That is the main struggle but I believe we are doing a pretty good job of navigating it up to this point.

Please tell us about Jessecure Business Solutions.
Our specialty is in all financial operations and IT support. We provide services from bill payments to Virtual CFO services and have also expanded to provide marketing, website, IT support, and full back office support. We are most proud of the relationships we have built with our clients and our teams. We take the relationships seriously and we have built a large amount of trust. I think what sets us apart is that we reinvest into our team members. We use our business as grounds to train and add to business management skills so that as our team members grow and want to start their own businesses we support them with our business resources and financial investments so they can have a safe arena to go after their own dreams and we get to let the cycle continue of helping that dream become successful.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My (Melissa) favorite childhood memory is actually going to work with my dad. He was a Sr. VP for a forging company and I got to get dressed up, go to his office and work for the day. It was so exciting because he had this mini fridge in his office with soda and tasty cakes. I made copies and remembered feeling very important and knowing I wanted to run a company someday.
