Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Savarino Ellis.
Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After many years designing and manufacturing children’s clothing here in Houston… my sister and I started a line of contemporary fine jewelry… MUSE Collective Jewelry. We needed something simple and elegant to wear to show off our pieces. I decided I could solve that! I experimented with simple silhouettes in solid neutral colors. Now that is what Tutu and Lilli is known for. Easy to wear… machine washable…tops… tunics and dresses… in a dozen colors.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have always been stubborn and determined about keeping my brands … Made in Houston Texas, USA. That is not always easy. There is not much clothing manufacturing locally… so I always found we had to find a way to do whatever we needed in house.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tutu and Lilli – what should we know?
We are known for stylish lifestyle clothing that goes effortlessly from day to night. Easy to take care of…. machine wash… hang to dry… and wear! Perfect for packing and travel! I love to see women who collect their favorite styles in every color! I am proud that we make our product right here in Houston and humbled by the amazing customers turned friends who have supported and loved Tutu and Lilli from day one. I hope our enthusiasm….quality and customer service are what sets us apart. I love what I do and I love sharing it with others!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have a great team of seamstresses and pattern makers that have been by my side since the children’s clothing days. I have a very supportive family and great friends, all of whom became instant customers. But my biggest cheerleader is my husband, Lee Ellis, who tried to convince me to design women’s clothing for many years before I was brave enough to do so!
