Meet Melody Fraser of Blissful Waters Float Center in The Woodlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Fraser.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was a busy mom and wife. In between careers, mostly home with my kids. I found myself having less and less creativity and feeling anxious and stressed. My husband suggested I try float therapy. It was love at first float. I then floated several times in Houston and Austin. I really wanted to make it a practice but the locations were very inconvenient. Austin was a great weekend getaway, floating then hiking or swimming. Houston was great but by the time I juggled traffic and dinner for the family, I was feeling another float. My husband and I decided to open our own float center. The Woodlands to me was like Austin and Houston had a baby. I loved that there are so many trees, nature and outdoor activities.

We designed Blissful waters float center. Hired an architect, I joined a program Houston puts together called “LIft off Houston”. I learned how to put a business plan together, met with different banks learned what they want to see from a start up business. My husband and I had a nice little stash of funds, an amazing business plan, and a loan. We were off and running preparing our build-out. Here is where the fun begins. Every business owner has their story of build outs and the struggles. My first contractor conned me out of my entire build out loan and left us with a mess. Now we had pre opening packages for sale, and buyers people were excited. My husband and I managed to pull more money together from family and more personal resources. Our second contractor fell to a tragedy and lost her life. Once again- we were back at the bottom broke and an unfinished build out.

We never gave up, to far in to give up. Attained a second SBA loan. Found a third contractor and as they say “third time is the charm”. We successfully opened December 8. Originally we planned Blissful Waters float center to be a four float room facility. Today we have two large 7x8ft float rooms, with room for expansion. We plan on a third float room in the near future and possibly two hyperbaric chambers. I love what Blissful waters float center has become. After your float, we have a relaxing post-float lounge room to enjoy the relaxed state floating gives before going back out into the world.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our struggles were huge as mentioned in our story. We also struggled with contractors understanding a float center was not like the other businesses they had designed. We needed soundproofing, to truly be sensory deprivation. Eventually, all that was worked out. Soundproofing, floor styles, timing of setting up the float tanks. Once open the community showed their support by floating with us.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a float center, specializing in sensory deprivation, in a spa like setting. When you come to float with us we have nice large float rooms not the pods. My husband is 6’2 and I knew how he struggled in pods hitting the wall. I am a germaphobe and needed the most sanitary tanks on the market. We chose superior float tanks the same float tank JJ Watt floats in. The filtration system is top-notch. Water automatically filters through a large filter, UV, Ozone and hydrogen peroxide. Sensory deprivation – sounds scary but it is the best thing for your mind. Removing all senses sound and light only enhances them later. I also find we make so many decisions on a daily basis. When my client comes in we do our best for them to relax fully and tailor each float experience to their specifications
We log in your float preferences so there is no need to ask you every time you float. When you come in your robe and slippers are ready for you, we have a complimentary 15-minute massage session in a zero gravity massage chair. Helps prep you for your float. After your float, we offer the post float lounge room to sit back enjoy some fresh Oxygen on the O2 bar infused with essential oils and CBD. We also offer wellness shots after your float of elderberry or wheatgrass. Bayou city kombucha, and fresh juice, and herbal teas. Customer service is top priority. We are here for you.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a free spirit. Always liked to do things my way. I loved the outdoors swimming, hiking, water sports. I spent the summers on my dad’s farm in the Texas panhandle and my school years with my mom in Houston, TX. I joke I am half city half country girl. Blessed to have both worlds so as much as I love the hustle of a city, I crave nature and the relaxing freedom it gives.
