Today we’d like to introduce you to Mercedes Moore.
Mercedes, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2013, when I created my first natural hair video on YouTube, Two Dollars Richer was born. I wanted to provide women and men of color with tips to care for their curly hair. My videos were filled with hair routines and product reviews, along with a safe space to discuss natural hair woes.
What started off a guide for naturals turned into a vessel for living my truth—my blog transformed into a lifestyle blog. My passion for new experiences and creating content slowly took over. I decided I wanted to help other humans, like yourself, navigate their authentic self and create a life they love. Two Dollars Richer, still immersed in the beauty world, has began exploring global travels and beautiful clothes.
Has it been a smooth road?
Deciding if I should create content outside of the beauty realm was hard. I felt confined to what Two Dollars Richer was known for and how I began. Natural hair content gave me a platform, interviews, and the sweetest viewers that feel like friends. However, I had several passions outside of this, like traveling and style, that were suppressed. This dilemma led to a break from blogging and time to focus on a new direction for my blog. It also taught me to focus on my overall vision and not get boxed into an ideal of what I should be doing.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Two Dollars Richer – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
If you need inspiration to live your life, travel the world or keep your natural hair healthy, then my blog is for you. I love teaching people how to care for their edges or travel for cheap to Paris.
Emails and DM’s telling me that my work has inspired an individual to see the world or maintain healthy hair gives me joy. My journey giving people the power to create a life they love is what makes me proud. Having a blog is cool, but if no one is inspired to take action within their own life, what’s the point of the content I’ve put out.
Two Dollars Richer is unconventional in the name and vision. I incorporate my Afro-Latina culture in the words I write. I snap images from my point of view. I have learned to be authentically myself and that stands out on its own.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston has given me opportunities I have dreamed about, like getting a college degree (Go Coogs!) and being able to perform in Solange’s When I Get Home Film. This city raised me and showed me love. It broke me down and built me back up.
What I dislike about Houston is what I see as an opportunity—We are not considered a global city, although we are the most diverse city in the nation. We don’t get the same events or opportunities that Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago does. Insane as we are 4th largest city in the United States. Although this is frustrating, I believe Houstonians (natives and transplants) can transform us into a global city. We are slowly gaining the same opportunities as NYC/LA and I’m proud of us.
