Hi Mercedes, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved the beauty of fragrance since I was an adolescent. I was taught that the way you smelt told your story. Once I got older and interested in holistic wellness, I wanted to discover a way to bridge fragrance and essential oil, and I did. I launched my aromatherapy line, Fragrant Beauty in November 2020, and it has been a wonderful journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Once I launched, my business was a hit! People were intrigued and interested. Customers were raving how well my products worked for them, but I found it difficult to create repeat customers. Also, I participated in pop-up events around Houston and surrounding areas and those were hit and miss, so doubt crept in mentally. I had to challenge myself to market my brand in different ways to my target audience and not let the failures deter me from my success.

Fragrant Beauty is an aromatherapy line that creates handmade essential oil blends for adults and children. Our products treat ailments such as allergies/sinus, menstrual pain, arthritis, mosquitoes and insect bite relief, and mental restoration. We create topical blends that can be applied to the skin and diffuser blends that can be used in a diffuser or a body of water (bathwater or steamer). Fragrant Beauty prides itself to serve as an educational bridge between aromatherapy and the black and PoC community. We have taken note of the negative connotation surrounding essential oils and their misuse, but we aim to change that one step at a time.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Take your time and focus on your path. It is very easy to get distracted by others’ success, so much so you lose sight of your own. Don’t let that happen because it will hinder you and stall your success. Also, be kind to yourself. You will make mistakes. Those mistakes will be lessons that you can apply through your journey. Set feasible goals every week, whether it’s through product development, social media, networking, finding a mentor, or etc. Finally, always have fun! Once the fun and passion is gone, it’s time to move on.
