Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Richey.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in San Diego, California and began making art at 5 years old when my mom decided to enroll me in art classes. I continued making art and exploring different ideas throughout Junior High and High School. From there, I received my BFA from Baylor University in 2012 and my MFA in Studio Art from Houston Baptist University in 2014. It was while I was at HBU that I started exploring the ideas that appear in my current work.
Please tell us about your art.
My work revolves around memory and its elusive & distorted qualities. The rising of a memory comes gradually and is obscured usually through the time that has passed from experiencing the original occurrence. We often fluctuate between our hard-edged reality and our personal remembrance of an experience. Our memories are hazy, soft-edged and visually distorted.
I work from old family photographs to help portray my ideas on memory. Growing up, I never got to meet either of my Grandfathers so I would make up stories about them from the photos I had and from the stories my parents would tell me. Painting is a way for me to put down on paper (or canvas or wood, for that matter) all of my memories I have experienced or my interpretations of photos I see.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think that in some regards life is a little easier for artists in recent years because of social media. An artist is able to connect with so many more people than in years past and are able to branch out to other cities (while still staying in Houston). Cities like Houston can help artists thrive by being active in the art or music community — go to shows and galleries, buy art/music, tell your friends about an artist you like, etc. We need to have active participants in what we do to in order to help us succeed.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
