Today we’d like to introduce you to Mesiah.
Mesiah, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It was a morning in Dec.2014 when a friend (Aj Steward ) called me out of the blue at 5:30 in the morning, said he had an interview with Atlantic Records with some artist he had, at this time I wasn’t even in music I was working in the plants killing myself. Aj wanted me to fly to New York with him. I told him I would see where it went and wait on him to come back. After his return he didn’t get a deal, I told him I was going to start a label and management group, thus creating SSMG / Something Serious Music Group. So I signed my first artist Mak Digg who I have to say and people around said was crazy with it, I then signed T-Gorilla, Square Biz, and FiyahBoi Youngin, who I had a nice run within Brazoria County but I was Hungry for more. Then while getting ready for a 1 on 1 with Atlantic records with Mak Digg, I was picking up CD’s for the trip to New York I ran into Iam Justified at MoBang Media and we talked and agreed to sit down when I got back from the Label meeting. So when I got back, me and I am Justified sat, and I began managing him, and we took Houston by storm with his hit single “Steady Increasin” Thanks to Go Dj Hi C and his club run, then Amir Diamond broke it on 97.9 The Box one night giving us a solid foot in the music scene. While managing Mak Digg , Iam Justified, I began managing Deadend Redd, and Layvon & Baby Trill as well as D.Tyner ( UGLegend ) and in the summer of 2017 launched the SSMG clothing brand fully. When 2018 hit I was on a strong path becoming a studio owner with my partner E Will . 2019 I released a SSMG album called “Serious Takeover,” which got SSMG an opportunity for a Record deal that we didn’t get due to numbers and lack of push from the artist involved on it, so I reevaluated the artist I was representing and restructured my plan.
While I was doing all this, I also got a chance to act for Ms. Cat in her YouTube serious “For My Child” and a series for Nesscary that wasn’t released yet and having a radio show called Something Serious Radio, Going into 2020 I’m still Managing my artist Iam Justified, Layvon, D.Tyner and Baby Trill, with a surprise coming , also still have the studio as well as creating a Podcast platform with E Will for anyone looking to start one, also brining the SSMG clothing line back to the front of the line, as well as Start having events in Houston such as my comedy show “Something2LaughAt” and bringing back Something Serious Radio as a podcast this summer. We just dropped Layvon’s first EP “Young Lover” bringing back real R&B Produced by E Will and Dropping Baby Trill new project this month titled “J-Block Baptized” and D.Tyners “Plug Me In “ both dropping end of March several videos on our SSMG YouTube page. I” m just trying to touch everything and anything and bring it to the front of the line as well as establishing my mark in Houston Culture and history but most important change the lives of the artist I represent because when I do it will change mine too.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it’s been a rough one, I’ve had people turn on me because I wouldn’t pay for projects (I’m a manager, not the label) I’ve have seen how artists straddles a fence in case something pops off they can say they have been there from day 1, I’ve had to rob Peter to pay Paul , I had quit my Job to press this SSMG brand and company , only to see the ugly part of the struggle. I’ve seen an artist get blackballed, I’ve seen one get accepted by not accepted even though he stays booked with PAID shows and hosting, I could show you all the emails, DM’s , Texts to People in Houston that suppose to be the gate keepers or whatever only to never get a response or the favorite terms used “What’s y’all budget “lol.” But I never did bad business because you only get one name in this business.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
SSMG originally started it as a music Label but had a talk with Mathew Knowles and realized I wasn’t a label due to labels cover 100% of the cost, so SSMG became a Management Group and focused on artist development, music placement, ETC. I have been called an AR because of my ear for talent. One thing that makes me proud is I never changed my outlook or goals. I built this from the mud, dirt whatever they want to call it. I never messed anyone over and remained solid and true to what I believed, and every artist I have done anything for in one way or another have become better and put in majors labels ears without any big bags behind me, any doors being opened, just good relationships and good business.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This is a touchy subject when speaking on music. When you look at all the Super Stars right now out of Houston, such as Travis Scott, Lizzo, Megan and a couple of others, the sad fact was they had to leave the city to pop. Houston only gets behind the certain artist, and that’s not a slug or nothing just facts, but the people so-called breaking artist only focus on certain ones, never the ones blowing them up in the DM, Inbox ,email ,ETC. But I’m willing to put my house on the SSMG artists Toe 2 toe, note 4 note, bar 4 bar. I feel if the city starts holding events, not SHOWCASES but events that give eyes, ears on what Houston has to offer we could be like the other Mecca cities out there.
