Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Brumfield.
Hi Michael , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got into designing clothes back in the early ’90s, mostly because I just wanted to wear things you couldn’t find on a normal rack. I’ve always been the type to walk away from the crowd. Reinviting myself over the years is what kept me going, but at the end of the day, I just enjoy doing my own thing and standing out a bit.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, sharing and selling my clothes has been a really smooth ride, and the support I’ve received along the way means everything. If I had to pick one hurdle, it was right at the start. With that first design, I hit a few bumps trying to get everything produced as fast as the momentum was moving. But taking a step back, learning the ins and outs of the business, and being willing to adapt—that’s what taught me how to handle those curveballs.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At my core, I’m a film guy who just wanted to explore a few different lanes. Filming is what I know, but I jumped into clothing design because the creative energy of it called to me. Anyone who knows me knows I don’t half-step. I’m bold, I’m right in your face, and I’ve always been about standing out—it’s all or nothing. It’s a beautiful feeling to design something from scratch, put it out there, and watch people genuinely love it and pass it to their friends. For me, what sets me apart is that I don’t sit around plotting and planning an idea for weeks. I see the vision in my head, I chase it down immediately, and I learn the lessons while I’m already in motion.
How do you define success?
At the end of the day, I define success by the freedom to create the things I dream up, and actually building a life around them.
