Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Whicker.
Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a self-starter, a self-worker, I always wanted to run something and not just work at someplace. I guess I’ve always been an entrepreneur at heart (though I am not a huge fan of the term). I started working for beer distributorships and continued from there. Running Beverage King – a drive-thru convenience store, wholesale and retail of soft-drinks, ice, and keg beer with my business partner Ginny Whicker (yes, although we are divorced we are great business partners). From there I moved onto Riverside Inn and Marina, a bar/kitchen alongside a river. Then I had a brief stint with a Shipley’s Do-Nuts. Lastly, I acquired Stetsons Nightlife with Ginny. That’s where we are today… While we our divorced, it’s still a family run business. Our son, Justin, my ex-wife, and myself work to make Stetsons Nightlife the best it can be!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As with anything, nothing is a smooth road. To do anything you need money, and as they say… “It doesn’t grow on trees.” While I have been blessed with the opportunity to run my own businesses there are always obstacles. You can have bad months, it’s a roller coaster at times. No matter how bad it gets you still have your overhead costs (insurance, payroll, taxes, etc…). Nothing stops just because you are having a hard time. However, time and time again we have managed to stay strong and prevail.
Stetsons Nightlife – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are Stetsons Nightlife and we are a honky-tonkin’, good vibe in’, down right country western nightclub that always has something going on. We are known for our clean and well-kept establishment, great drink specials, country western music, and awesome staff.
As to what we are most proud of as a company? That would have to be all the hard work, dedication, and time we put into Stetsons Nightlife. It’s not always easy but we always try are hardest. Everything we do truly is for our customers, without them we wouldn’t be here. We pride ourselves on keeping customers happy by offering great drink specials, daily events, and the occasional concert. We like to engage and respond to feedback. I think this is also what sets us apart from others… We are only human, not a massive conglomerate, we are family run. Because of that we can still listen to our customers, learn from mistakes, and always respond to the community by actively adapting and changing to our customer’s wants and needs.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for us comes day-by-day. We are always trying to best ourselves from the day, week, month, and year prior. Success is not being afraid to try things, to fight for what we believe in, to do what we think is right. So for us specifically at Stetsons nightlife, success is trying new ideas and learning from them. Some work well and others do not. But it is what drives us ultimately. That goal to always beat our previous record that is what moves us forward that is our success. It betters us of course, but it also betters our customers’ experience. We know we are successful when we see the joys and good times our customers are having.
