Meet Michelle Anderson of Sysco Foods in Energy Corridor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Anderson.

Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Risktaker – she who is willing to do things that involve risk to in order to achieve a goal. That is me to a “T”. My journey to my current role as Senior Director of Marketing Communications for Sysco Foods has been a winding path paved with many difficult decisions and taken risks. I pursued a degree in Marketing but realized in my second year of college I was really good at math and solving problems so I changed my major to Accounting, After school, I obtained my CPA (Certified Public Accounting) license and went into public accounting. It was during this time my path crossed with Sysco Foods and I fell in love with this company and became their Controller. Who doesn’t love food? I have taken many roles during my 18 years with this company, many of them lateral or a lower level, so I could learn all aspects of the company. With each leap of faith, including leaving the company for four years to own a promotional advertising business to learn more about marketing, I continued to develop my skills to get me to my current role.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I look back on my life, it’s the struggles and risks I have taken which have made me who I am today. For one thing, having the grit to persevere through challenges has made me a stronger person.

Sysco Foods – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I love working for Sysco Foods. They really care about their employees, customers and the environment. We just recently opened up three solar energy sites in Texas, now how cool is that? I work with an amazing group of people that are dedicated to helping restaurants succeed. The best perk of all -tasting all the new food concepts in our test kitchens!

In my current role, I oversee all events, digital marketing (Web, Email, Social, SEO), our Foodie magazine, and overall brand governance. I am currently working with our global companies in eight countries to further entrench and market our Sysco brand.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me, is about building a life you are proud of. As I continue along my path, that feels truer than ever. I’m in a job I adore, which fulfills some of my deepest values and uses my greatest skills. It supports a lifestyle I’m committed to, which creates space for growth and learning and adventure. I’m sure it’s going to evolve and develop further. Who knows what I’ll be doing in five years’ time? I certainly don’t.
