Meet Michelle and John Maler of 1/2 Price Boxes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle and John Maler.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We opened our first location in The Woodlands Texas on July 12, 2004. I had worked at a large corrugated facility in Houston prior to our business venture and gained some knowledge in the corrugated industry. We knew there was not another business that was offering a service for affordable moving boxes, shipping boxes and packing supplies in The Woodlands. The Woodlands location took off well, so two years later we opened up in Katy, TX. After that, we opened two locations with partners and licensed the other locations. Today, Houston makes up 9 locations of Company, partnerships and licensees. We also have locations in Austin, TX; San Antonio, TX; Frisco, TX; and Tulsa, OK making 13 – 1/2 Price Boxes in total

What sets us apart anyone else is: #1 Our customer service. Next inline follows our Pricing, the selection of product and the inventory we keep on hand. These qualities keep customers coming back and telling others about us.

In 2011, we opened a 15,000-sq. ft. warehouse that services all 13 locations. We continue to add new product lines and inventory to meet our customers’ needs and are always working on new ideas to make our concept better.

Has it been a smooth road?
The first 7 years seemed to be going really well. However; about 6 years ago we had large competitors challenge the market forcing the biggest one of all to slash moving box pricing. It really hurt our sales and customers were upset with us (largely due to our name). We were really worried and not sure how to handle it. It took us about a year to come up with a game plan, but once we did, everything else seemed to fall in place. It was a scary year and a half, but we are better for it. Not only was it good for the concept, it also forced us to always stay alert and keep growing.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize moving boxes, shipping boxes and packing supplies. We sell to many individuals, moving companies, and we also service small to mid-size businesses. We sell on volume (low prices to move the boxes as quickly). Our customers can buy 1 box or thousands of boxes. We are so proud and humbled to still be in business after all these years and to still love what we are doing. We look how far we come and we are always amazed at how blessed we’ve been.

Hands down, what sets us apart from anyone selling boxes or supplies is our customer service. We greet our customers with a friendly smile and help with the process from the time they enter the door, all the way to helping load their vehicles.

The moving side of our of business is on the top list of stressful events in one’s life, so we like to go the extra mile to ensure their move (with the boxes) is a stress free one. Many time, customers will say…Well that was easy.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is such a great city. I think mainly because it’s in Texas. The people in Texas are so friendly and supportive. We are native Texans and very proud to be from here. If you have an idea or a niche, Houston is a great place to start a business.
