Meet Mike Malone of Dipped

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Malone.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Started as a child with my father who was obsessed with the Dairy Queen Dipped Cone.

Every summer we would take a road trip out west and we would stop at every DQ that we saw. That was our original inspiration but added our unique twist with a variety of imported chocolate dipping sauces and a number of different of toppings to choose from.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As we got more and more serious about it we decided that we need to start playing around with recipes. The problem was that we did not have a soft serve machine. We started looking at test kitchens and equipment and then one day a soft serve food truck was posted for sale on eBay. We made a bit of an impulse buy but have not looked back. The truck had all equipment we needed.

From there we started working on recipes. It was shocking how long it took to get it right. Lots of late nights eat ice cream! We had a great time.

The most difficult part would have to be the permitting process with the city of Houston. We had to spend an extra $4,000 on the truck to fix some things that were not up to code. Really dumb things like our sink was 1 inch too shallow so we had to install a whole new 3 compartment sink. Finally got that behind us and we are off to a great start.

Please tell us about Dipped.
Our product is a gourmet dipped ice cream cone. Super high-quality soft serve, dipped in your choice of imported chocolate dipping sauce and then rolled in up two topping of your choice. Simple and Delicious.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Traveling out west stopping at every DQ with my dad to get a dipped cone!
