Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Monsive.
Mike, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Our company started with just me and a truck performing service. I endured a lot of windshield time traveling from one end of the state to the other. Back then it was not uncommon for me to leave Houston to head to Amarillo to perform a service call and then head straight to Laredo for an emergency call. I did whatever it took to perform the best possible service I could. Our company ultimately got its name from everyone asking me to do something ASAP.
It seemed that, for whatever reason, we were always being asked to do something under extraordinary circumstances. The company has grown exponentially over the years and we now have offices throughout Texas to service our clients, but we are proud to call Houston home. I haven’t lost sight of that determination to provide the best possible service to our clients, and this is something that I try and instill into every single employee. We have acquired about 10 companies in the last three years taking our history back to 1947. We have multiple companies that perform everything from Video Surveillance, Access Control, Fire Alarm, Security Systems, Home Theater, Home Automation, and Rented Monitored Video Surveillance Solutions. I have obtained patents on some of our technology and have been recognized by our industry several times. Recently, I was named on the Top 40 under 40 in the Security Industry. ASAP doesn’t just stand for a fast response, but also that you are Always Secure and Always Protected.
Has it been a smooth road?
Hah! I would love to meet the business owner that says they had a smooth road. Sometimes I think being a business owner is like being a glutton for punishment. Every single day and every single project has challenges. My CFO constantly goes around saying you have to get through the hoop. Visually, this makes me laugh and think about the circus and dogs jumping through hula hoops. Sometimes it may feel like a three-ring circus and I’m the ring leader, but we have built a well-oiled machine. Business is not for the meek as it takes extreme determination every single day to get up and make things happen all while trying to be the leader.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with ASAP Security Services – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a low voltage systems integration company. Well what does that mean? We provide the infrastructure, installation, and integration of all the sub systems in a business or home. This would consist of voice / data, wireless networking, audio / video, surveillance, security, access control, etc. The challenge with all of these different segregated systems is getting them to work in harmony. Utilizing automation to simplify life. Being able to grab your phone and see who is at the door, and then disarm the alarm and let them in while you are half way across the world. There is a lot of competition in our field in Houston. Most of our competitors have 4-8 employees and will typically never grow beyond that size. The fact is these companies don’t have the bandwidth or employee capital to provide service excellence. They are always chasing the next big deal. No matter how much installation revenue our company generates, we are a SERVICE business. I believe what sets us apart from our competition is not only realizing we are service business, but focusing on it. I started the company by providing as much of the best service I could. This gave me the opportunity to see thousands and thousands of installations and the lack of quality, documentation, and serviceability of those systems. I vowed then that I would never let one of my installations look like the equipment I was servicing and I hold true to that today. We have a dedicated in house engineering and AutoCAD design team to document every single installation. We install every project with service in mind. That allows us to continue to service our clients quickly and efficiently. Besides, everyone wants security ASAP.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston has an entrepreneurial spirit. I felt it the first time I came here and just knew that eventually I would be moving here from San Antonio and that was almost 12 years ago. Houstonians know how to get things done. With all of this entrepreneurial spirit and can do attitudes, I think you could build anything here. Technical resources, machinery, intellectual capital, and drive are amazing ingredients to success and are all found in Houston. I feel that most Houstonians are truly genuine and no matter where you go you could be sitting next to some multi-millionaire and not even know it. I feel that community outreach here is second to none. I have been honored to participate in many fundraising and volunteer events. I love that this has opened the door for me to volunteer with my children and instill the importance of giving back at an early age.
I think one of my biggest complaints about Houston would be the lack of information and disconnection between citizens and decision makers when it comes to big ideas and projects for the city. Take the Astrodome for example. NRG Park is pretty awesome, but it could use more hotel and event center space. I would challenge anyone who disagrees with that to try and get a room in the vicinity of NRG Park around Rodeo or OTC time each year. This should be very straight forward. And 290. Can you even call yourself a Houstonian if you don’t hate 290?
