Today we’d like to introduce you to Mochii.
Mochii, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name Kwame Hawkins, but I go by Mochii. I’m an artist from Houma, Louisiana but I live in Houston. I didn’t come from a big music background. My brothers use to rap when I was younger, and seeing that made me want to do it, but at the time it wasn’t really my passion. I also taught myself how to play the piano. I joined the military straight out of high school at 17. While I was in the military, I started to slowly gravitate more to making music after meeting one of my homies who was a music geek. I then started making beats for fun. I didn’t think I was good, but everyone else told me that I was. After, I started getting all of my equipment to start making beats and selling them, but nobody was buying them. So, I started making music to my own beats because all I ever wanted was to hear someone make a song to them. I received some good feedback, but music still wasn’t my passion. I left the army after 4 years, moved to Houston, to go to college to be a lawyer. I quickly realized after interning at a law firm and doing numerous amounts of school work that being a lawyer was not for me. Summer time came and I had a lot of down time. So, I started making music again. Dropped my first single in 2019 titled “Papers”. This was different though. The vibe was different, the cadence, the passion. I didn’t sound like my fellow artist from Louisiana. The feedback I received was amazing. So, I took that sound, perfected it and became Mochii. That’s when I realized that music was what I wanted to do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road wasn’t smooth in the beginning, but only because I was too worried about what people thought about me and my music. Once I realized that none of that mattered and started focusing more on what I liked was when it became smoother.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a rapper/singer/producer/engineer. This is what I am known for. This is what sets me apart from others because I can do it all and I like to think that I do it well.
What were you like growing up?
As a kid, I was very adventurous and very curious. If MomDukes was to answer it she’d say I was mischievous. I always wanted to know everything and how to do everything. I was easily entertained and it never really took much for me to have a good time. I was into music, but not as much as I am now. I was also in to drama. For a moment I wanted to be an actor.
