Meet Monica Batum of Snipped in North Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Batum.

Monica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started off braiding my own hair when I was like 11 years old (1997). I would also braid family members and friends hair too at that time just to make some extra cash while in middle school. I’ve always had a strong passion for making people look and feel beautiful but wasn’t really taking my gift serious. Finally, I went to CHI Cosmetology in Aug 2014, graduated Dec 2015, and got my Cosmetology License in March 2016. There’s always this nervousness there when you’re fresh out of cosmetology school and of course, it takes time to build clientele. So, I decided to work for Supercuts and ended up quitting shortly after because I knew deep down inside that, I could work for myself and generate more revenue and have more flexibility in my schedule to be there for my three children. I worked for myself for a short while and wasn’t’ bringing in enough money so I decided to go work for someone else again. Fast forward to Jan 2018 I took on a job as a Receptionist thru a staffing agency, don’t make sense right? That’s not even my field! Lol. Long story short they fired me and that probably was the best thing that could’ve happened to me. I made the decision that I’m going to focus on being a hairstylist and never work for anyone again. Needless to say within a year I’ve managed to service several beautiful ladies in my own private salon suite. It hasn’t been easy at all, but the happiness, freedom, and flexibility that working in purpose brings makes it all worth it!

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not. Where do I begin? Anything that’s worth something won’t be easy. Being a single parent and trying to run a successful business can be a lot. Sleepless nights, crying, feeling like giving up, and dealing with everyday struggles that comes along with just living. I just want to encourage anyone that’s not where they would like to be in their business to keep going and with hard work and dedication it’ll take off!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Snipped specializes in natural styling such as crochet styles, silk pressing, and individual braids. I also offer women’s and men’s cuts of course (hint hint) Snipped! I’m just proud of being able to open my own salon suite within months of being fired from a job for unknown reasons. That makes my heart smile! The thing that sets me apart from others is the way I market my services. I use a collage that contains video recordings of me servicing clients so that potential clients can see me actually doing the work, after pics showing finished look, and music for them to enjoy while viewing my work!
