Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Jones.
Monica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began utilizing my background in the music industry as a blogger/personality to work with music artist in Houston to host or participate in charitable events beginning in 2011. In 2014, I founded the Born Identity Project to focus on bringing more awareness to smaller and worthy causes and nonprofit organizations within Houston. Thanks to the support and commitment of community-minded individuals I’ve been able to bring events that not only aid those in need but influence others to give back to their community as well.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has NOT been a smooth road but that’s expected in life. The struggles I’ve faced are due to limited resources to curate experiences and events for those in need without a major financial backing or partnership opportunity. At times I would discourage my efforts to create events because I didn’t see the point of spending $1k+ to produce an event for charity when that money could be donated directly to the organization.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Born Identity Project is known for doing social good in the community through a host of social change events like our signature event ” Social Change Sundays” which engages young professionals in the community to give back to a specific cause quarterly. Also, we raise awareness and monetary funds for local organizations programming and events. We serve as the connector to the community. Proud of our efforts in helping to serve more than 30 local causes and/or organizations. I think what sets us apart from other organizations is our personal relationship with local charities and that we rely solely on community-minded individuals to volunteer and donate to our causes.
What were you like growing up?
My mom would say I kept her busy growing up every day I would come home with a new interest or hobby. Flute, piano, recorder, violin, trumpet you name it I played it and it was the beginning of my love affair with music and instrumentation. Throughout my high school years, I became more confident in my gifts which I tried to run from in middle school and by the time I went to college I was becoming a young woman who recognized early that what you put in you get out. I’ve always been a part-time comedian making friends laugh with jokes and my storytelling.
