Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Roquemore.
Hi Monica , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out as a kitchen beautician. From 8th grade and all through high school, there was not a day that my mom or stepdad came home and I was not doing someone’s hair. I was a braider first, so I braided a lot of guys hair. Then I went off to college and started doing people’s hair on campus and around the town. It was a very small town and I was about to find out exactly how small. I went into Fantastic Sam’s to get a haircut by one of their stylists. We got in the subject of doing hair and I told her I do a few girls from that town and people on campus. And she says, “Are you the stylist from Houston doing every body’s hair here?” I told her Yes! And she says to me, “Girl you are good! You need to go get your license” I knew I did hair pretty well, but I didn’t think I did it well enough to do it full time. But she saw something in me that even those closest to me did not see. So I went back to the college campus library and looked up cosmetology schools in Houston. And one them caught my eye and I put in an inquiry to get more information. And by the time I made it back to my campus apartment my phone was ringing. The school called me immediately. So I left college and came back to Houston to go to cosmetology school. And the rest is history. I got a job as a shampoo assistant through my cosmetology instructor, who God gave me favor with, for a well known stylist who specialized in short cuts. I was HORRIBLE with short hair before working with her. I learned a lot about the industry and marketing through that salon owner. I was close enough to observe how she ran her business which ultimately became my springing board forward into my own.
I never truly believed I could truly run my own business, but once again God sent someone who believed in me and ultimately invested by helping me financially open my own salon. I open the doors in March 2009 and they have been open ever since. I’ve had some major successes and some major failures, but through it all my clientele has been consistent and continuously growing every year! And now I’m proud to break into the salon product space, by launching my own products Jubilee Hair Creations. I’ve always been in awe of how the right products can transform the hair and make it healthy and strong. I’ve watched products over the years get results and I specialized in the quality, feel and consistency of those products. So now I am ready to produce my own and bring them to the market!
I’m grateful to God for my journey, my success and failures. They have all made me have the experience to help others and help them avoid some of the pitfalls I hit. So I look forward to more growth, more opportunities and making a difference in this world, one head at a time!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My road has not been smooth. I have had to grow in ways I didn’t know at that time. I had to learn to manage money early because some weeks are busier than others and I had to learn to manage everything that came in.
I also had to stop partying so much because it caused me to loose focus easily on my business and I saw other Hairstylists loose clients because of this one bad habit. I had to lead and not only do hair but run the business of doing hair. Which was challenging when trying to relay my vision of excellence to employees who weren’t invested properly.

Roqmo Hair and Beauty Lounge is a first generation business that specializes in Hair Extensions, Weaves, and Healthy hair over all. I am most known for pixie cuts and being able to transform looks into more than the clients expected.
I am different from others because clients feel the concern and passion I have for each of their heads individually. No one person is the same and we treat them individually.
I am most proud of the results I’ve been able to get in those who thought their hair was hopeless. From those coming out of wigs into wearing their own hair. Or even with those who are happy with the hair enhancements I’ve provided that looks very natural for them.

Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to our hair care products, wigs and extensions to go all over the world to those who can’t physically sit in our chairs.
