Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Sanchez.
Monica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Having started my small business more than three years ago, I can remember that I have always been a creative person. I began with a passion for art and the desire to have a creative outlet outside of my day to day job.
I grew up in Houston and was raised in a very creative household. Both of my parents are artistic and I got a ton of inspiration by them especially my dad. Growing up, I really did not know anything about the makeup industry until I was about 22 years old. Following so many makeup videos on YouTube, I felt like I was just getting started on something that I did not know that was going to have such an impact on my life. I would often be the one in the family who would enjoy trying to bake, paint, and play musical instruments. It always has been a passion of mine to paint and during this transition I applied the skills I had in painting to do makeup. I was very grateful for my parents who always support me in whatever I do.
My dad like I mentioned earlier, has always pushed me into going to school and do something good for myself. I mentioned to him that I wanted to start my own business. He was so excited I feel, as he himself owns a HVAC business. I look up to him so much! He inspires me and this is the reason why I am where I am today and for some reason that gave me a drive that I have never thought I had in myself. My dad has always made it crucial that we all find something personally fulfilling to do in life. Therefore, being a freelance makeup artist is something that takes time, practice, creativity and it is never ending of learning. What started as a hobby turned into a few calls from friends and family to do get their makeup for their special occasion has now grown into a network of returning clients which continues to grow more and more each day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The origin of MAKEUPBYMONIB started with me hitting rock bottom. Being in the beauty industry can have its challenges and fears! At one moment in time self-doubt was a major challenge; however, through consistent dedication and discipline, I got out of that mentality and focused on my goals and motivation! Confidence is key!
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
I specialize in makeup application for all special occasions such as; weddings, proms, quinces, baby showers, photography makeup and more. My style of makeup has made me so proud because my services not only enhance the beauty of the client already as but just gives them the confidence to shine! I am proud to have my own style of applying makeup as other artist do. I love to make the client feel and know that a little goes a long way. I have to say that makeup is my passion and I have thankfully had many clients who have been satisfied with their makeup and just seeing them smile is everything! When I make my clients smile that is real success!
I am most proud of becoming my own boss and just seeing the success along the way. I have come so far from not only pushing my craft and learning so much marketing skills for it. I have expanded my business by now having a modest home studio that provides my clients a safe, comfortable and relaxing space for their service.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When I make my clients smile that is real success!
