Today we’d like to introduce you to Mónica Vélez.
Mónica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started very young in my native country, I could say I was born and raised between sewing machines. My mother was my inspiration, I attended a design institute where I obtained my degree as a fashion designer and graduated with honors. The hardship in my country Venezuela brought me to Houston 14 years ago. I worked for nine years in an alteration place where I was taking notes of every detail of the structure and finishing of the pieces made by great designers.
I decided it was time to take action about fulfilling my dream and in December of 2012 I opened my fashion design studio Stitches Couture, now with 32 years of experience I have perfected my talent which has allowed me to have excellent clients such as Gina Gaston (ABC 13 news), Donna Vallone ( Tony’s Steakhouse, Vallone’s), CleRenda McGrady (project P.U.S.H., writer) Yolanda Adams (singer), Candace Dixon Ford (project beautiful me), Javania White (fashion stylist) and many more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To me, it has been easy getting to where I am at because I have always worked with dedication and proof of that is that the majority of my clients are based on great references. At the beginning, I had a hard time with the language but it is not an obstacle anymore.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Stitches Couture – what should we know?
In my fashion design studio, we design and make wedding gowns, evening gowns, bespoke clothing, exclusive designs, cocktail outfits, business executive attire, quinceañera dresses, etc. Working with any material and any design. Behind every design is a story and for me is very satisfying finishing that story and a reward for my job is to see the smiles on all of my clients.
I am very proud of my perseverance and the fact that I never have an “I can’t” as an answer. No matter how difficult a design could be I always say “yes, I can do it”.
What sets me apart from the rest is the fact that I am a perfectionist with what I do and the attention of every detail in my designs.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I thank my hard-working team.

Since the emergence of our lives can be easy or complex such is when we learned to walk, the first steps is difficult but our own insistence made us lift.
What greatness God gave you in your wonderful hands for creation in your haute couture art, our great mother wherever she is will be very proud of you.
Who said that the road is easy, what I am sure is that it is worthwhile and worthwhile and if it is worth trying.
I feel honored to have been in your workshop and see up close your great effort and above all patience to achieve success.
The success does not come alone, we must not wait, it will never come, if it is not accompanied by perseverance, attitude and positive aptitude to do things, it is worth dreaming that if possible, but that dream of being always charged you win and more desire to do things.
I love you very much, it is not very little.
