Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Montgomery.
Hi Monique, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I fell in love with portrait photography in 2015 when a friend of mine asked me to take her senior pictures. I had so much fun in taking her senior pictures that I started watching YouTube videos on how to pose people, how to edit, and much more. I was obsessed with Nigel Barker’s work from America’s Next Top Model and how he could tell a story from his picture.
When I got to college, I realized there was a need for more female photographers and it inspired to start my photography business. It quickly grew in my second year of college that most people could not believe I was a Business student and not in college for Photography, LOL. 2018-2020 ending, I took a break from my business due to my dad being diagnosed with cancer and would only take very few pictures of close friends and return clients. I completely lost my passion and joy. In December 2020, a close friend of mine really wanted senior pictures done and asked if I could do her senior pictures. I did and the session reminded me of my love for photography and why I wanted to be a photographer.
I started researching more, invested in a mentor and styled shoots to build my portfolio. I want to be a photographer who tells the stories of all cultures and creates a space that is inclusive and diverse where my clients feel safe and are welcome. My goal is to be a good photographer who can share and celebrate the different milestones of my client’s lives. When people look at my work, I want them to feel happy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Starting from the beginning again after being gone for so long can be extremely intimidating and at times imposter syndrome sinks in. I try to remind myself that the hard work I pour into my photography will be appreciated by the people who value my work and editing style.
As a small business, you deal with a lot of ghosting but you have to remember that it’s not personal and just business and always feel happy because another photographer’s day has been made. I truly believe in community over competition.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am portrait photographer who specializes in Wedding, Senior Pictures, Family, and Couples. What sets me apart is my personality. I always make sure my clients feel like they have a friend and cheerleader! I am Nigerian American and was born and raised in Nigeria. Growing up, I was blessed to travel to 11 countries which made me fall in love with different cultures and food and that’s why I strive for inclusivity and diversity in my business as a photographer.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
