Meet Moriah Alise

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moriah Alise.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
As a child, I always knew I was supposed to be an artist, but like many families my mother and father focused on sports. I trained in Martial Arts between the ages of 7-14 until I reached my black belt. However, I knew something was missing. I begin indulging in any type of art I could from music to theatre, always skipping visual arts. It wasn’t until my last year of college that I begin treating drawing and painting as a discipline. I ruined countless canvases while a good friend of mine, Ryan taught me techniques. We would stay up all night painting until finally I felt confident within my own talent.

After graduating College, I went on to Intern for Stella McCartney in their Public Relations department. They continued assigning me graphic design & styling projects. After working three jobs that had nothing to do with art and somehow creating a position at each company centered around art I decided art is what I should do.

I then decided to become an art teacher, in which I taught high school art for 2 years. Throughout the course of these years I begin developing a business plan that would become reality sooner than expected. I as well as my partner Ed co – founded District Art Gallery and the rest is history.

Please tell us about your art.
My personal style is Abstract. I love to create an abstract art that appears to have movement. In order to achieve this, I usually focus on two colors at time. I use my palette knife to create a pattern that achieves the illusion of movement. I’m typically inspired by emotions, whether the feelings are mine or a friend I take that energy and transfer it onto the canvas. I’d hope for those viewing my art to see their own reality. I don’t necessarily want them to feel what I felt at the time I painted. I want them to take their own perceptions and realities and transfer the energy I put onto the canvas into their personal feelings and thoughts.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge I notice artist face is being able to bridge art with business. I’ve always noticed this as a struggle which is one reason I went into representing artist.

The most important challenge I’ve noticed aspiring artist face is learning how to be vulnerable in their work. Learning how to explode their truth onto the canvas. People feel when art is true, so it’s important to explore your truth and share it.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
