Meet Mufaddal Gombera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mufaddal Gombera.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mufaddal. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Like most kids growing up in Texas, football was a way of life. Until I tore my ACL while playing football for Memorial High School. My ACL surgery and recovery piqued my interest in orthopedics and sports medicine. I went on to finish undergrad at UT-Austin, then medical school at Baylor College of Medicine here in Houston. After a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. I was eager to come back home. I joined Fondren Orthopedic Group and Texas Orthopedic Hospital in 2015.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been some struggles along the way, namely because it is such a long road. Four years of college, four years of medical school, five years of residency and one year of fellowship is a long time before you’re finally “doing” what you love. And there are multiple potential challenges, both from an academic performance standpoint and a work/life balance standpoint. Some say the challenges and lengthy training are to “weed out” those that can’t handle it. I think that’s a very antiquated notion, and really it takes a sharpened knowledge base and skill set to be able to properly treat people.

It takes a lot to trust someone else with your health and well-being, but the lengthy challenges and training only help me provide the best care possible.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I am an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopy. My company is my practice, where I am a partner at Fondren Orthopedic Group and Texas Orthopedic Hospital in the medical center. There are hundreds of orthopedic surgeons in town, many of whom do excellent work. At Fondren and at Texas Orthopedic Hospital, my partners and staff are known for going above and beyond to provide excellent orthopedic care. And I am proud to work along with them in similarly providing excellent care to my patients.

And the thing that really sets us apart is the people we get to work with. We have some of the best and brightest working with us, and they all love what they do.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
One of the most important characteristics in what I do is empathy. It is paramount for me to understand what brings a patient in to see me. Not only to diagnose the problem, but how is it affecting their lifestyle, what their goals are, what their expectations are, and how I can personalize a treatment plan for them. In the end, we don’t treat X-rays or MRIs, we treat people. And understanding someone’s problem is paramount to providing excellent care for them.
