Meet Nadie Roberson of Freedom Psychotherapy and Wellness Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadie Roberson.

Nadie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a Houston native. I graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Ecology. I used to work at Zoos, Wildlife Centers, animal control, etc. (I’ve had some risky run-ins with wild animals in my former life). I went on to earn a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Houston Baptist University. Because the behavioral aspect of the wildlife world was easy to transition into the human world. While earning my Master’s degree, I worked full-time overnight shifts in a psychiatric hospital as a mental health technician. During the time, I was in grad school full time and working full time. For two years of that period, I was in an abusive relationship as well. Didn’t make it easier, as you can imagine.

Fast forward, six years later, I had gone from tech to therapist. I’d worked every unit on the floor, inpatient and outpatient and was running the adolescent outpatient program there. But, in June of 2020, I quit running my Company full time.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not. Went from wildlife to people. Weird and I still miss working with animals. Grad school full time and work full time was not fun. Working overnight shifts mostly. Sometimes I would do two 16 hour shifts and an eight back to back just so I could have the rest of the week free to do school. But those 16-hour shifts were not a game. Some periods I just working normal five nights a week 11p-7a, go home and sleep until 12-1p and then go to class. Do homework and back to work at 11p.

Not to mention being in a toxic relationship. Fighting all the time. He often didn’t let me sleep when I got home and purposely would wake me up. He was violent and drank a lot, went to jail at one point. Just a lot to deal with.

Please tell us about Freedom Psychotherapy and Wellness Services story.
We are a Psychotherapy and Wellness business. So I provide counseling services as well as wellness experiences such as wellness coaching, online programs, retreats. I’m known for helping people figure out who they are and building self-confidence through improving their wellness holistically. So I specialize in interpersonal therapy, sex therapy, self-esteem, and a holistic approach.

I’m most proud of being able to help people love themselves. I’m proud to say that I help people treat themselves better. Just little old me… It’s wild to think how, I am able to touch a person’s spirit every single day. My company is different because I am accessible and down to earth. My clients can text me. I explain things to them. There’s no white curtain. I try to fully be myself so that my clients can see that and give themselves permission to do the same. I am also fully virtual so that helps expand my reach and those they may not have had access to therapy or the type of therapy they want can have that with me.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see a big shift to virtual, of course. I see a shift to groups vs. individual counseling. The power of the community is becoming more and more present. With social distancing and not having as much human contact, I believe that more mental health professionals are creating safe communities for their clients. And I also see the white curtain, coming down. This is a huge shift I’m noticing. Because therapists are taught not to self-disclose and taught to be blank screens. Not to let clients know how you think or feel. They aren’t supposed to have any insight into who we are. I think that is changing. Because we are starting to see that people open up more to a human than they do a robot. Clients like to know that we aren’t perfect, they like to know we’ve been through hardships, and we struggle too.
