Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadine Berns.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nadine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, my dad is the reason I got into photography. Growing up he always did cool family photos for us and photographed all our soccer games. He gave me my first camera when I was 16 and I was hooked. I took photos of everything. I slowed down when I went away to college but when I got back from Arkansas, I went out and took fun photos of all my friends. Shortly after that, random people were asking me to do their photos. I couldn’t keep a minimum wage job to save my life, so I was like heck, why not. I’ll charge these people $50 and take their photo. I quickly fell in love. And I photographed it all! Events, newborn, family, engagement, all of it! I was a jack of all trades.
I finally got asked to my first wedding in November 2014 and I was on a high! It was SO much fun and so full of love. After that, I got asked to do a second wedding in December 2014, it was a graduation party in a home and the parents and siblings all knew that it would shortly be flipped into a surprise wedding for all the attendees. That. That was one of my favorite moments. It was so intimate and so fun. I had a few more incredible weddings after that and then I second shot for another wedding photographer for a year. I learned a lot and decided to rebrand and focus solely on lovers. I’m not good with words, which is why I take photos. But the feeling of getting to be apart of such a special time for these people is indescribable.
Providing them with a product and an experience that they will remember for a lifetime truly makes me so so happy. I am always just so humbled when I get chosen to document these peoples once in a lifetime, day. It’s truly special out of all the people in the world they found their soulmate and they are now asking ME! to be their one in a million, soul-tog.
Has it been a smooth road?
No. It’s not consistent income. It’s hard being a small business owner. Taking photos is the easy part. But everything behind the lens is a lot. It’s been a lot of trial/error. You can’t take days off either. It’s hard because I struggle with anxiety and depression but it’s definitely helped me push through my bad days for the sake of my business. I’m still learning new things every day. But I wouldn’t want it any other way.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
So I rebranded to Just Like Honey by Nadine Berns beginning of January 2017. I specialize in lovers. That is my focus. I do not discriminate. Love is love, and I want to document it all. I’ve heard my photos described as romantic and cinematic. It’s a little more dark but still colorful. I give 100% of myself to all of my clients and I think my work shows that. I am just so proud that I am stable enough to get to this everyday, full-time.
I’m super fortunate and I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for my parents and Caleb supporting and pushing me to be my best. I think the coolest thing about my business is that my dad is apart of it. I photograph 85% of my weddings with him and it’s just such a fun and special thing for me. Getting to do what I love with who I love and who got me into this is just too cool.
