Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy De La Cruz.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Well…. Houston guided me to where I am today. but my hometown Seattle, Washington is where it all began. I was the youngest child of 3, so I was always alone, my siblings were at that “I’m too cool for you” stage most of the time growing up, so I used to kind of be in my own world most of the time, and not to mention Our situation at home wasn’t the best. In the times where I felt most confused and afraid of what was happening around me, I found that I discovered a sense of peace when I created something new. Seeing what I felt come to life. was something so pleasing to me and as I got older I continued to draw. I enjoyed being able to tell this blank page what was going on and that I didn’t even have to open up with my words. When I got older the creating stopped for a gap of my life, and as I’m looking back. reminiscing. it was a time where life was very dull and unfulfilling. I was just trying to fit in with what society wanted me to be, I wasn’t being myself and in doing so. I wasn’t expressing what needed to be expressed.
One Christmas I was with my sister and she wanted to paint, so we set everything up and I began painting…I LOVED IT! Everything about it was a moment of clarity for me, it all just hit me at once and I realized at that moment that I loved painting. When I got back home from the holidays, I went to a craft store to stock up on new supplies and THAT’S where my Journey to free expression began.
Please tell us about your art.
I enjoy creating paintings inspired by my life experiences, lessons, what I am feeling, my faith and the people around me. When creating I am just being honest, I want people to see who I am and what I stand for through my paintings. When you look at my paintings I want you to feel that, I want you to know that you too can be inspired, that you can be yourself and can potentially create a movement of inspiring others.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Now a days with technology I feel that it’s very easy to connect with other Artists’ it’s mostly about initiating a conversation. Don’t hesitate, worse thing someone can do is maybe not respond but even then, you tried. I say just take a shot if you want to get to know someone. We have amazing tools to connect, so take advantage!
