Meet Narine Bhola of DJ Yuri B

Today we’d like to introduce you to Narine Bhola.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Narine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for music began when I was just 8 years old. At that young age, my father taught me how to sing and play the piano. After a few years of learning, I started singing in our family band, D New Dimensions. We performed a combination of Reggae, Soca, Chutney and Bollywood songs. Our attraction for these genres was influenced by our roots in Trinidad & Tobago. In my teenage years, I continued to perform with our family band in New York, Trinidad and Texas.

In 2006, I then moved to Houston, Texas to complete my Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Houston. My brother was also living in Houston so we decided to form our own group, called “DND Entertainment.” Together, we continued our passion for music and performed throughout Houston, Katy, Pearland, The Woodlands and Sugar Land. We brought light to our West Indian culture while performing Reggae, Soca, Chutney and Bollywood songs in front of hundreds of people. From private venues to large scale events such as Houston Caribfest, we took “DND Entertainment” to new heights.

Upon graduating with both my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from UH, I had a choice to move back to New York or stay in Houston and work in the city that I grew to love. The choice was easy. I began my professional career in the financial services industry working for companies such as JPMorgan Chase, Allstate Financial and Scottrade, Inc. I love helping people and being in this field allowed me to assist Houston families with their financial and retirement planning.

My love for music didn’t stop. While working in the financial industry is a full-time task, I still find time for my original passion. In April, 2017, I therefore started DJ’ing and it immediately took off. Between April and December of 2017, I performed at over 2 dozen venues and private parties. In 2018, I plan to grow as a professional DJ and provide DJ Entertainment not only throughout Texas but also on radio airways across the world.

To me, it’s truly a blessing to be successful both academically and professionally. However, it’s just as important to follow your passion and to do what you love. Whether it’s a hobby, giving back to the community, or a talent, we can all shine during the work week and when we leave the office. Together, we can build a strong Houston community with our skills and thrive as one with our talents. So, I also encourage every reader to do as I’m doing and follow your passion.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life that’s worth living for comes easily. There has been several speed bumps along the way. For example, for the past 11 years, I worked full-time in the financial service industry. Much of that time, I also spent attending UH to acquire both my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. I could have easily convinced myself that work and school was enough. There was no reason to add more to an already busy schedule. What I found however, was that because my love for music was so deep-rooted, it came naturally to me. I didn’t find it difficult to find time and to continue following my dream. I’m happy I did, because doing so provided a stress-reliever. It was a way to escape from the realities of life and it was also a way to spread my love for music to the community.

Please tell us about DJ Yuri B.
Forming DJ Yuri B was one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done. It put a stamp on what was once a hobby to know what’s a thriving business that I still view as a hobby. I say that because the love I have for music and entertaining others is so timeless. As a DJ, I spend a few weekends a month providing professional music for private events such as weddings, birthday parties, corporate events, etc. I also spend time creating music on SoundCloud a couple of times per month showcasing different genres and mixes. In 2018, I’m excited to announce a partnership with Red Apple Radio where I’ll become one of their resident Radio DJ’s. What sets me apart from others is the level of passion, love, care and thought that I put into every song, mix, and interaction with people. Houstonians and audiences around the world are immediately attracted to my work because they see how passionate I am towards music and entertaining others. Perfecting the craft and having fun is my main focus.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood was learning to play the piano for the first time. I remembered when my father asked me, “Which instrument would you like to learn how to play?” I immediately said the keyboards/piano, because I felt that if I knew how to play that, I’d be able to play any instrument in the world. One of the toughest thing for me to do was play with both hands. I was right-handed so learning how to use my left hand on the piano was very difficult. Eventually, as I practiced countless evenings and began seeing progress in myself, there was no turning back. I was not only proud to say I could play an instrument, but I quickly learned that I loved music in general and began appreciating everything about it.
