Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathalie Mejia.
Hi Nathalie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I fell into this journey in 2019, shortly after having my daughter. While at home, I often wondered how photographers created those stunning images of newborns, the tiny details, the peaceful poses, the pure love captured in a single frame. Motherhood had opened my eyes to the beauty of these fleeting moments, and I wanted to preserve that magic for others.
I was gifted my first Canon Rebel camera and began photographing every single day. I dove deep into learning, mastering my settings, watching endless tutorials, and studying techniques to bring my creative vision to life. Over time, I upgraded my equipment, but the foundation of understanding my camera and light has been my greatest tool.
I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best photographers across the country, attending workshops and mentoring sessions that helped me refine my craft. After four years of grit, growth, and unwavering passion, I proudly opened my own studio in 2024.
Today, I specialize in photographing newborns, expecting mothers, and growing families. Celebrating each milestone with warmth, artistry, and care. My studio is a cozy, welcoming space where clients can feel comfortable and confident as we create timeless memories together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. This journey has had its fair share of bumps and challenges. When I first started, I was a mom trying to learn photography from scratch while balancing life with a baby, toddler, and teenager. There were so many moments of frustration, camera settings that didn’t make sense, photos that didn’t turn out the way I hoped, and times I questioned if I was even cut out for this.
Balancing motherhood and chasing a dream wasn’t easy. There were long nights of editing after my kids went to bed and early mornings trying to fit in learning time between naps. Investing in equipment and education was scary, too, especially when I was just starting out.
But every struggle taught me something. It taught me patience, resilience, and how to trust the process even when progress felt slow. Looking back now, I’m grateful for every obstacle because it pushed me to grow, not just as a photographer, but as a person.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in newborn and maternity photography, two of the most meaningful and beautiful seasons in a family’s life. There’s something so special about capturing the connection between a mother and her baby, or the quiet sweetness of those first few days after birth.
What I love most is getting to truly connect with my clients. Every family has their own story, and I want each session to reflect that, whether it’s soft and simple, bright and joyful, or full of emotion and laughter. I spend time getting to know my clients so we can create something that feels personal and unique to them.
My goal is to not only capture a single moment, but to grow with my families, from maternity to newborn, and through all the milestones that follow. Watching families come back year after year and seeing their little ones grow is one of the greatest joys of what I do.
I’m known for my patience, especially when it comes to working with little ones. Babies and children have their own pace, and I believe in creating a calm, relaxed environment where everyone feels comfortable. That’s when the most genuine moments happen.
What I’m most proud of is being able to create timeless photographs that families can treasure for generations, the kind of images that bring back memories, emotions, and all the love from those fleeting moments. Being trusted to capture those memories is truly the greatest honor.
What are your plans for the future?
My dream for the future is to create a space for creatives, a warm, inspiring environment where photographers and artists have everything they need to capture beautiful, timeless moments for their clients. I want to build a community that supports and uplifts one another, where creativity can truly flourish.
I also hope to connect and collaborate more with local birth professionals, so that more families have the opportunity to document their journey from bump to baby and beyond. These moments fly by so fast, and every family deserves the chance to hold onto them forever.
As I continue to grow in my own craft, I would love to step into the role of an educator, guiding and inspiring the next generation of photographers. Helping others find their creative voice and confidence behind the camera is something I’m deeply passionate about.
The possibilities for growth in this field are endless, and that’s what excites me most. I can’t wait to see how this journey continues to evolve, not just for me, but for the families and creatives I get to share it with.
