Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathalie Perez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My cake business has been a long, learning experience in the last six years. Basically, I started by experimenting with a cake for my mother’s friend. My mother has always been helpful guide and lending hand. She requested fondant which is a pretty challenging type of style. Not knowing how to make it or even how it works I seemed to pull it off to my surprise. I made my own marshmallow fondant and it has been my ongoing recipe for all my cakes. Then it kind of went on with doing it for family events. It was then that I was asked to make a specialty by a friend and soon enough it was posted on Instagram.
As you know word got around and it seemed like requests kept coming in. It started off with a cake or two a week and now I’m limited to how many orders I can take per week. I would love to expand my career because it is now my full-time job. I’m currently based out of my home but I have high hopes in one day owning my own bakery. Houston is very large city but I prefer to have my business in Eado (East downtown), just to be able to accommodate a wide variety of clientele. Again, thank you so much for contacting me. It feels good to know hard work does pay off.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would have to say No. Along with making cakes comes the struggles of low staff, limited space in the kitchen, long hours, and being a mother full time. Challenges are figuring out how to make certain custom cakes, juggling time, and detail work.
Please tell us about Nathalie’s Cakes.
I run a small business from my home. I specialize in custom fondant cakes. The part I am most proud of being my own boss and making people happy. I would have to say what makes me special is that I also do dessert for dessert tables. For example, cake pops, cupcakes, pretzel rods, chocolates dipped strawberries and dipped Rice Krispies.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have to say nothing. I appreciate my learning experience. Everything I know is self-taught. It has also given me the opportunity to stay home with my daughter.
