Naturalista, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hair has always been “my thang”! I can recall being a school-age having braiding contests with my sisters and always smashing the competition. At the age of 11, I had proven myself equipped enough to style an adults hair! Excitement ran through my body and out of my fingertips while I braided my first client’s hair! That set of Micro braids took 12 hours to complete. She couldn’t complain because she ONLY paid $50.00. From that day forward, I stopped practicing and unknowingly began building my clientele. It took me 20 years of knowing my talent to actually follow my passion and I couldn’t be more thankful!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m new to Entrepreneurship so I anticipated failure and shortcomings, but God has been so good in providing and guiding me through this journey. One challenge that I did face had a healthy work/life balance. Since I enjoy being at the salon and it definitely does not feel like work/job, I can stay there 20 hours a day without a problem. I had to learn I don’t have to work seven days a week and it’s ok to rest.
Tell us more about the business.
I am the salon owner of J2iG. I am known as Naturalista Nai (which is my IG handle) or Ms. Nai. I specialize in Natural Hair for men, women and children. I am known for my diverse Protective Styling, including knotless box braids, traditional box braids, rope twist, spring twist, flat feeding twist, feeding braids, mini two strand twist, to name a few. There are over 70 services that can be booked online. I am the proudest of creating the first crochet passion twist!
I pride myself on keeping up with the style trends, always willing to learn new techniques, professionalism and superb customer service. There are millions of stylist but what sets me apart from other is my patience with everyone, especially children. I want all of my clients to fully understand their hair care needs and I am always available.
