Meet Dr. Juliet Breeze of Next Level Urgent Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Juliet Breeze.

Dr. Breeze, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
One Saturday afternoon about 4 1/2 years ago, my son injured himself. I knew he didn’t have a life-threatening problem but since his pediatrician wasn’t open, I decided to take him to a freestanding emergency room that was in a strip center near our home. The experience was good but the bill was shockingly high for a simple problem, nearly $1000 for something that would have cost $60 at our doctor’s office. That’s when I decided I wanted to try to provide Houstonians with a more cost-effective solution for quality after-hours healthcare.

Together with a talented management team, we developed a plan to open Urgent Care clinics that would provide price transparency to patients and quick convenient service 12 hours a day, 7 days per week. Today, we have ten clinics across the Houston Metro area with plans to expand.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The business has been challenging since many people still don’t know the difference between Emergency Rooms and Urgent Care. I thought that when we let people know that we provide the same care as an ER for non-life threatening problems at one tenth the cost, it would be easy to attract patients. But it is a confusing marketplace and we have had to provide a lot of consumer education so that patients know when they can use us instead of paying the ER prices.

Lately, we have begun to notice that more people seem to understand the advantages. We have been fortunate to have a lot of our patients spreading the word. We recently saw our 200,000th patient in Houston,

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Next Level Urgent Care story. Tell us more about the business.
With our deep background in orthopedics and our on-call orthopedic consultants, our centers are the best places in Houston for injury care. We take care of broken bones, sprains and strains every day. My staff has intensive training on splinting and casting so that we can often save patients a trip to a specialist.

The other really special feature about our service is our option for avoiding the waiting room. We have a call-ahead operator and an awesome app that allows patients to put themselves in line from their home. Then we just text them when an exam room is ready…they skip the waiting room entirely!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
About 23 years ago, I was assigned one night of orthopedic call as a medical student and Scott Breeze was the resident also on call that night. Turns out that chance assignment was the luckiest night of my life. We were operating on a shattered knee cap and he let me use power tools to help him (very romantic). For the past 23 years, Scott has been my partner, mentor, advisor, and cheerleader. Four kids, four pets, and at least four career moves later, he is still the one who makes me feel like anything is possible. He has encouraged me to attempt things that I might not have had the courage to try. Lots of other lucky things (and my share of unlucky things as well) have occurred since then but meeting Scott definitely changed the course of my life.
