Meet Ngoc Khuu of Craftsbyngoc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ngoc Khuu.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ngoc. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I think it all started when I was really young. I would draw on my parents walls and pillows just because I enjoyed filling in the white spaces. There was never a time where my right-brain wasn’t working in full force. This eventually blossomed into me creating a ‘safe’ space for myself and sharing it with my small circle of friends. Taking a leap of faith, I created Craftsbyngoc to keep track of all the things that I created. At first, this was really just for me. But soon, it took off and turned into my passion, then into my career of choice.

After graduating from college, by the grace of God, opportunities kept pouring in. I became a full-time director of special events at The Rustic Brush – Memorial, Sugarland, Katy, and Gleannloch Farms location. (I get to craft, almost EVERY DAY!) My blog started to grow traction from the bujo community. I was privileged to be able to create murals for various locations. I mean the list is endless! Overall, I am extremely blessed to be able to do what I love because it never feels like I’m working. I love what I do, and I am so grateful for all the opportunities that let me be as creative as I can be.

Where I am today is just the starting point for me. I made the decision to go back to school to pursue a Master’s in Art Therapy. I’ve always had a passion for helping others and sharing with the world the amazing things we can do with art. I hope that by getting my master’s, I’ll be able to continuously share what I love to the community.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not. It was the hardest thing to do, especially being Asian. My parents have had those normal expectations. To be a doctor or a lawyer. Telling them I was going to become an Art major freaked them out. They were scared I wasn’t going to be able to make it in this type of industry. I guess you could say, I’m that one Asian who majored in Art and hasn’t gotten kicked out the house – haha!

Not only that but sometimes you hit an ‘art block.’ You come up dry with ideas and inspiration hits a stopping point. This is when I really start to doubt myself. It’s a endless struggle to always have consistent inspiration or even motivation. But, without the struggle there is no progress.

Please tell us about Craftsbyngoc.
Personally, I never thought I would have made it this far with a risky career. Craftsbyngoc is a blog I’ve created to share with others my love for art. I believe it’s important to share the ideas we have and the creations we make so that the world is a bit more colorful.

In the coming years, I want to bring my knowledge to the front-lines and help others in therapeutic ways. Art is not only just for pure enjoyment but really, art can have endless possibilities. I think there is so much more I can learn and more I can do to help the community. I love being able to expand my knowledge and share it with others!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started earlier. There was so much doubt and so many ‘what ifs’ that kept me from unlocking the potential sooner. At the end of the day, I want to show people that it’s okay to take the risk. I took the hugest risk of my life and am literally living in a dream.
