Thanks for sharing your story with us. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 1994, North American Solutions | NAS was founded my step-father and I in a two-bedroom apartment on FM 1960 in Houston. NAS’s mission was to specialize in providing property and casualty insurance for school districts and colleges. We partnered with an OKC company that had a large presence on the employee-benefit side of schools, but they had a desire to get into the property and casualty side of the business. My step-father had prior experience in this field and I brought experience on the employee benefits side. We rented furniture, a copier, and a fax machine and went to work. The first six months were devoted to establishing the infrastructure of the business before we had our first client, Springtown ISD up by Fort Worth, TX. Springtown is still our client to this day.
NAS lost $25,000 in its first full year of business but has been profitable every year since 1995. Today, we serve more than 200 school districts and colleges in Texas and Louisiana representing more than $60 Million in annual premiums.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a specialty insurance broker, we represent hundreds of markets which allows us to bring our clients tailored-solutions. The insurance market is historically volatile, particularly when catastrophic storms are involved. Volatility brings substantial changes for our clients.
Hurricane Harvey was particularly challenging this year. One of the programs we manage insures more than one-third of Texas coastal school districts. Rockport is one of our clients, as well as many throughout southeast Texas. Our team has been heavily involved in relief and recovery efforts. Insurance rates for schools have increased dramatically in the last few months, and 2018 will be a challenging year for schools.
