Meet Young Prince

Today we’d like to introduce you to Young Prince.

Young Prince, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Funny enough, I was always a class clown but I started small in the church as many do. Hosting the Christmas programs or youth week events. As I got to college, the African student association used to have shows and since I was the funny friend in the group, I’d go up there and do my thing not thinking much of it. I was more focused on being a basketball player. Unfortunately, at the end of 2014, I let my grades slip and I failed off the team and nearly out of college. I was very depressed and basically felt it was all over. Then one day, I got a text from my friend Equality (yes, that’s his real name) basically telling me there’s an upcoming fashion show and they need a host he recommended me. At this time I wasn’t interested because I wasn’t working and needed money. Eventually, he convinced

Me and I started going to the practices. February 26th, 2014 is when my life changed forever. It was a sold-out show and that was the day Young Prince was introduced to the World. Since then, I’ve had four successful college tours, hosted at the Apollo theater twice and was the Host at Afrochella in Ghana this past December for the “Year of Return.”

Has it been a smooth road?
No journey of success is ever easy oo. I used to post videos a the time. There were very dark days where I got down on myself because I wasn’t getting the likes and views I wanted on videos I would post. Sometimes it would lead to a creative block and I wouldn’t have an idea of what to post for weeks at a time, making me even more irrelevant. I would also get looked over for hosting opportunities because I didn’t have a large following and people didn’t know who I was. At the time, I chalked it up to haters as opposed to being patient and waiting for God to let me know that it was my time.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am Young Prince, the greatest Event Host you’ll ever see. I love that I am able to spread my culture to multiple people who come from different backgrounds. That is one of my biggest passions. Our culture is so beautiful and rich. Back in the day it wasn’t cool to be this proud of who we are. It took a while for us to get here but here we are. Growing up in my neighborhood, I grew up around different cultures so I incorporate that into my routines so I can appeal to everyone. I don’t want to be one of those entertainers that only appeal to the African crowd. There’s no longevity in that it puts you in a box. My style is for everyone! Children teenagers adults grandparents animals you name it! If you put them in the room with me they will leave entertained.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston is amazing to be honest. It reminds me of New York, actually. So many different people from so many different backgrounds. However, summertime can be brutal! That heat is no joke.
