Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Juarez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Oscar. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve worked my whole life, I was taught that if you don’t work, you don’t eat. My very first job was dishwashing, a small Mexican local restaurant in the southeastern part of Houston, everyday after school id go and work my butt off, I’ve always put my 100% into everything I do, whether it was sports, school, or work, I always put my everything into it.
I was proud and slowly moved my way up from washing dishes into the kitchen; that’s where I grew my love for cooking and was interested in learning more and more. I learned to expand my palette, I joined culinary school and next thing I knew I was working restaurant after restaurant, from front of house to back of house, working with super talented chefs, learning from amazing award-winning and talented chefs from my school, teachers with books, their own businesses, I soaked in as much as I could. I met a friend, her name was Griselda Barrios, a server over at Peska Seafood Culture, a restaurant we both worked at, she’s always been a pastry chef and had a love for it, she decided to open up her own bakery finally and so years later she reached out to me and asked me to help her out.
She primarily does the baking, and I’ll handle all of our social media pages, our catering orders for events, weddings and special occasions. I remember having nothing as a kid, a tough childhood, and always wanting things I could never have and I learned to have this mentality that if I want something, I have to work for it and that’s exactly what I did to get to where I am today, work hard, push negative people out of my life, remove any distractions and staying focused. It’s a lot easier said than done, but at the end, we all have control of our own lives and any decision we make, is what impacts our daily lives so make the best choice.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s never a smooth road for anyone, everyone has their own battles and problems they fight, no matter what you think or what you hear or see, we’re all fighting our own wars. Everything is perspective, as a kid, I never had anything I wanted, my parents never let me out, I wouldn’t get the toys, clothes, or food I ever wanted. I wasn’t allowed to do things most people got to do, I wasn’t taught life skills most people learn from their family, but blood isn’t always family, family is the people you truly care about and our there for you no matter what, the way I see it, you will never succeed until you fail first, once you fail, and fail, and fail, you’ll learn from your mistakes and succeed.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Treacherous Leches story. Tell us more about the business.
We are Treacherous Leches, we are a small local bakery in the heart of Downtown Houston. What makes us different than others in the city? We are the first and only tres leches based bakery in town, some places you’ll find things like chocolate or caramel tres leches, but we have seven different flavors that set us apart. Each one being made different with its own little thing, we have flavors like red velvet, piña colada, coffee, strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, and caramel, all topped with whipped cream and different toppings like pineapple and coconut shavings, caramel, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, kettle corn. As a company we are mostly proud of our seven flavors of tres leches and are our hard-working staff, without one person we wouldn’t be the well-oiled machine we are now, each employee plays their role and pitches in, and we all deliver amazing service and delicious cakes.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think a little bit of both honestly, we are still fairly new, we’ve been here for about 7-8 months so we are close to our one year anniversary which we will be celebrating and have plenty of surprises coming, but it’s been a crazy ride and we’re excited for what’s to come.
