Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Kail.
Hi Paige, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn to animals, but over the years I’ve realized my career has been just as much about people as it has been about pets. Emergency medicine sits at the intersection of both as I support families through some of the hardest days they’ll expereince while helping teams perform at their very best under pressure.
I’m a proud Texas native and graduate of Texas A&M University, where I earned both my undergraduate and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees.
Today, I serve as Senior Hospital Director for VEG ER for Pets at VEG Houston in the Heights and VEG Katy in Cinco Ranch. While I still love the medicine, especially complex emergency surgery and critical cases, my greatest fulfillment now comes from developing people. I have the privilege of mentoring veterinarians early in their careers, building high-performing medical teams, and creating hospital cultures where collaboration, curiosity, and continuous learning thrive.
Emergency veterinary medicine is constantly evolving, and so is our profession. My focus has expanded beyond treating individual patients to improving the systems that support exceptional patient care. Whether we’re refining clinical protocols, inventing in mentorship, or fostering a culture where every team member has a voice, the goal is always the same: delivering outstanding care for pets and people when they need it most.
Every day reminds me why I chose this profession. We have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference during moments that families will remember for the rest of their lives, and it’s an incredible privilege to lead teams that embrace that responsibility with both expertise and compassion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all – but I wouldn’t have wanted it to be. Every stage of my career has brought new challenges that have helped me grow.
Early on, I learned to navigate the intensity of emergency medicine, making critical decisions under pressure while supporting families through some of their most difficult moments. Today, as a leader overseeing two hospitals, my greatest challenge (and greatest reward) is developing people. Building resilient teams, mentoring the next generation of veterinarians, and fostering a culture of collaboration requires just as much intention as practicing great medicine.
Looking back, the challenges have shaped by leadership style. They have taught me that growth comes from embracing uncertainty, staying curious, and always keeping both people and pets at the center of every decision.

Any big plans?
I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about having all the answers-it’s about creating an environment where people feel supported, challenged, and empowered to grow. The strongest teams aren’t built by avoiding mistakes; they’re built by learning from them together and continuously striving to be better.
In emergency medicine, no two days are the same, which means curiosity and adaptability are just as important as clinical knowledge. Some of the best ideas and biggest breakthroughts come from asking questions, listening to different perspectives, and never becoming complacent.
Above all, I have learned to celebrate the wins, big and small. Emergency medicine is demanding, and taking time to recognize your team, share a laugh, and appreciate the privilege of helping pets and people when they need it most makes the difficult days worthwhile. Those moments are what sustain you over the long run and remind you why this work matters.
