Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Watkins.
Hi Patricia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a Houston native who grew up in the 5th ward area off of Liberty rd. I am the 2 child of 7 and the oldest girl of 6 girls. My hair journey started off at a young age, with doing my little sisters hair. I moved to Jacksonville fl at 15 where i began to braid my own hair. I soon graduated from the Jacksonville job corps with my high school diploma and cna certification. Not long after i relocated back home to Houston in 2011 and i would soon began my business The Braids By Trish. Braiding out of my government apartment for four years. I rented my first booth at a black owned salon right on liberty rd called Blaqs Box where i stayed for a year until finally getting my very own office suite. Though it didn’t last long i moved into a different building where i grew my business and have been on a grind to maintain it. Covid hit pretty hard but it didn’t stop me from grinding. I went viral on TikTok for floor length braids i did on my assistant 1.8 million views. I also started traveling servicing travel nurses who were on the front line but still needed me. As Covid died down so did the business and Over the past year business has become slow so I’m entering a phase of rebranding and new marketing and i only pray that the economy becomes better for entrepreneurs all over the country.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Covid hitting
Low marketing
Low social media following
Slow season
And trying to do it alone has to be the hardest thing
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a braid stylist serving the Houston and surrounding area. From Knotless to box braids. Kids or adult. I’ve been crowning excellence for years.
